Saltwater Sounds Wrap-Up #40

Welcome to Saltwater Sounds, a collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. This is where I share all that’s been going on in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what’s to come and the inspiration I have found from other bloggers around the web.

Random This & That

Welcome to October…can you believe we’re here already?

I have to say that September is always a tough month for me. Maybe it’s because the garden feels like it’s in limbo and I spend the entire month grieving for those summer flowers that I worked so hard to grow and nurture.

But then October comes along and all of a sudden I’m in the mood for fall.

It’s time to visit the pumpkin patch, plant my fall containers, and light every candle in the house while drinking a pumpkin spice latte in my new fall pumpkin mug.

And to celebrate the new month, we put our new copper witch weathervane from Good Directions up on the greenhouse.

Do you decorate for Halloween? I usually don’t but so many people have inspired me lately and I’ve decided to decorate the greenhouse. The witch is a good start. Can’t wait to show you when I’m done.

New Project

I’ve been neglecting the inside of our house all summer. But I’m finally starting a new project.

My office is upstairs, overlooking the water, and I rarely share this space. Across the hall is a large guest room. We’re going to switch places to give my office more space.

As you can see, we’re making some changes to my desk.

We have 4 extra legs that were originally made for our kitchen farm table. The company had made a mistake with them and they’ve been sitting in the garage collecting dust for a couple of years.

It will be a farm table desk when we are done and I can’t wait to show you the results. I think you’ll be really surprised when it’s finished.

In the Garden

Have you seen my fall task list for the garden?

It’s game on! Here are the tasks I’ll be working on this month…

  • Transplant geraniums to pots and move into the greenhouse
  • Plant fall containers
  • Decorate the greenhouse for Halloween and fall
  • Clean out garden beds: Pull any spent annuals and cut back perennials
  • Plant spring bulbs
  • Add mulch to garden beds for protection against cold weather
  • Divide and transplant perennials

The zinnias and strawflower are still going strong in the cut flower garden. You can see by the way the blooms have formed a cone that the pollinators have been hard at work.

I went on a shopping trip to the nursery the other day and picked up some ornamental cabbage and kale, pansies, violas, asters and mums for fall containers.

Here’s a picture from last year when I moved all my geraniums to their new home for the winter.

Everything looks so warm and beautiful around your home. Remodeling your office. That’s a dreaded task around here. I have so much stuff. Thanks for sharing my centerpiece arrangement.

  5. Your garden still looks wonderful. I love the witch but I would want it have it up all year around because it’s so beautiful. We decorate for halloween but it’s different here because it’s spring and the days are getting longer. We are also in daylight savings time so it doesn’t get dark until about 8pm, when most trick or treaters are in bed. My husband loves halloween, it’s his favourite holiday to decorate.
Can’t wait to see your new office space.
