How to Grow and Care for Sweet Peas

SHIPLAP AND SHELLS

With their bright colors and sweet scent, sweet peas are the perfect cut flower. Here are gardening tips on how to grow and care for your sweet peas.

Provide Support

Sweet Peas are climbing vines that need support to grow properly. Install a trellis, fence or a sturdy structure to tie them up to for support.

Water Regularly

Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Water deeply whenever the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid overhead watering to help prevent fungal diseases.

Mulch Around the Plants

Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plants. This will help retain moisture, suppress weed growth, and protect the roots.

Pinch the Tips

When the plants reach about 4-6 inches in height, pinch off the top to encourage bushier growth and more blooms.

Deadhead Spent Flowers

Remove faded or wilted flowers regularly to promote continuous blooming to help prevent plants from going to seed, redirecting energy to produce new blooms.

Monitor for Pests and Diseases

Watch for common pests like aphids and slugs. Use natural and organic options if necessary. Look for signs of disease such as powdery mildew or root rot.

Fertilize Your Plants

Sweet peas are heavy feeders so fertilize at least twice with a tablespoon of fish emulsion and liquid kelp per gallon of water.
