Winter Decor Ideas to Use After the Holidays

Are you scratching your head, trying to decide what to do with your home decor now that we’re into the winter season? Here are some simple winter decor ideas that will brighten up your mood after the holidays are over.

The hype and excitement of the holidays are over and the Christmas decor is packed away. When it comes to transitioning from Christmas to winter decor:

  • Some take down their Christmas decorations the day after the holiday and immediately clean, organize, and declutter.
  • Others are reluctant to take down their holiday decor because they don’t want the house to feel cold, dull, and boring.

Which one are you?

It may be gloomy and cold outdoors, at least where I live. The days here in the Seattle area are filled a lot of rain right now. I’m not able to spend time in the garden or even outdoors as much as I want, so it’s important to create a home full of warmth and coziness.

COZINESS – a state of warm snug comfort.

Winter decor is simple.

When you think of your home being a much-needed sanctuary in the winter months, words such as warmth, cozy, welcoming, and inviting come to mind. By using touches of greenery, outdoor elements, and warm textures you can create the perfect indoor retreat.

When decorating for winter, I like to keep things neutral and pull in a lot of natural elements for texture.

Here are some winter decor ideas to help inspire you and put you in a good mood despite the weather outdoors.

To keep from getting overwhelmed, I take down my holiday decorations in phases, which makes it even easier to transition from Christmas to winter.

  • Every ornament displayed around the house, whether they’re hanging on a tree, placed in a bowl, or among the garland decorations is packed away.
  • All things specific to Christmas decorating such as faux-wrapped gifts or anything with Santa on it go.
  • I say goodbye to anything with the word Christmas on it.
  • The color red is taken down to create a more neutral feel. I will however set some red items aside to incorporate back into my home decor for Valentine’s Day.

It’s so easy to take down your true Christmas decor while leaving any winter elements displayed. “Naked” Christmas trees, garlands, branches, and pinecones are some of the decor you can keep for the winter season.

I do try to remove any red berries that may be on any greenery leftover from Christmas.

Touches of greenery are where most of my color comes from when transitioning from Christmas to winter decor.

I’ve swapped my Christmas tree for an olive tree in this corner of the living room.

I’ll slowly start replacing the bare mini Christmas trees with dried eucalyptus, ferns, and fresh rosemary from the garden in a few weeks when I start transitioning to Valentine’s Day.

snowshoes for winter decor

Snowshoes, sleds, and ice skates were already displayed around the house for Christmas. By removing items like the red plaid scarves, bells, and ribbon, I was able to give my snow-inspired decor a fresh new look for winter.

Add cozy textures such as throws, pillows, and comfy blankets.

Baskets, shutters, and wood accessories will also add texture to your space as well.

Comfy cable knit throws, wool area rugs, velvet, and sheepskin are all cozy textures that will definitely make a statement this winter.

Mercury glass candle holders and vases that were displayed during the holidays still look just as amazing. Silver is another great addition to your winter decor. I’m adding silver trays and pitchers to the mix as well.

You can never have too many candles in the winter. They are magical and add so much warmth to a room.

Add a mirror to a room to reflect the light from the candles or fireplace for an even more beautiful look.

Decorating your fireplace mantel is so easy in the winter.

I removed the dried oranges and ornaments from the mantel from Christmas and left the greenery, candles, and pinecones.

The vintage books are a great replacement for the Christmas decor that filled this space earlier.

Keep your winter centerpiece simple. You can create a focal point on your table just by adding some greenery and a candle.

Incorporate greenery either by displaying a mini tree, adding pinecones and greenery to a dough bowl, or adding outdoor branches or faux plants to a pitcher.

winter kitchen decor

My winter kitchen has a lot of neutral pieces such as:

  • breadboards
  • dough bowls
  • a collection of rolling pins
  • wicker picnic baskets
  • textured table runners

I chose to add greens and whites to my neutral kitchen this year.

A lot of the greenery was left from the Christmas decor. I switched out any red and Santa decor for silver and more greens.

    1. Thank you CoCo. We definitely can feel when fall and winter hit. I think it would be much harder to decorate for a season when it’s warm outside. Wishing you the same winter magic my friend.

  6. Kim, I really love your home, and winter is no exception. Rain is the typical for our winters too, although we did get hit with 10″ of snow at the start of this past weekend….only to end the weekend with over an inch of rain. Your methods of winter transition are the perfect counterpoint to the gray that winter delivers outside. I’m a take it all down right after Christmas girl, so more blank space seems to be my vibe (even when not just having moved). Your decor and tips are a welcome read for this vintage-loving heart of mine. Happy to be joining you on this hop today.
