Saltwater Sounds Weekly: Last Week of February

Welcome to Saltwater Sounds, a collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. This is where I share everything happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what’s to come, and the inspiration I’ve found from other bloggers around the web.

This and That…

I hope you’re enjoying your last weekend of February. Spring is less than a month away, and I couldn’t be happier.

Depending on where you live, you could either be looking at severe winter weather this weekend or balmy temperatures in the 80s.

I was shocked to hear that Southern California even had blizzard warnings. I spent my first ten years and a couple of adult years living in the L.A. area, and I don’t remember ever having weather like that. It seems crazy!

snowfall in the garden

If we get any snow for the year in the Seattle area, February seems to be the month we get it.

It’s hard to see the spring blooms making their way out of the ground only to be covered by snow. It feels like such a tease.

Our snow started falling Wednesday night and was gone when we returned home from physical therapy Thursday afternoon.

We did have some snow in the forecast this weekend, but it won’t last long. Temperatures are on their way above freezing.

Knee Updates

I’m happy to report that I am progressing with my new knee. It’s been a little over two weeks, and I’m able to bare weight on the knee, I’m walking better, and I’m finally able to stay awake for most of the day.

PT continues to be the hardest thing about this procedure. I wish I could sugarcoat it, but it’s tough.

The hardest thing for me is that I’ve been programmed to think pain is bad and avoid it throughout my 56 years. Pain meant something was wrong.

And now I’m being told that when an exercise gets to the point when I can’t take it anymore, I should continue holding it there for another 10 seconds. I’ve got some mental blocks to overcome, but I’ll continue doing what it takes to have a wonderful new knee with full movement.

Around the Garden and Greenhouse

I haven’t been in the greenhouse much since the surgery. I’ve watered a couple of times, but that’s about it.

I’m so thankful to have someone helping me sow the seeds while recuperating. She’s been such a help. Hopefully, I can get back out there soon. Most seeds are scheduled to be sown on the week of March 6th.

It will be very crowded in the greenhouse.

I just bought grow lights for the greenhouse. This will be the first time using them since I’ve been growing flowers in the greenhouse. I can’t wait to see the difference in size when they’re ready to be transported outdoors.

My seedlings seem tiny each year but eventually catch up to everyone else’s once they’re outside.

If you’re looking for supplies for seed starting, I have some options for you below.

Around Our Cottage

I’ve been doing very little indoors lately, but that doesn’t mean that progress hasn’t happened here. We refreshed the hallway ceiling last week. You can see the blog post about it down further in this post.

My hubby brought home some potted flowering plants so I could add a pop of color to this dreary time of year.

Penny Denim Jump-Up Violas and Alpino Early Lime Saxifrage are the names of these pretty plants.

This was such a pick me up, and I’m enjoying them so much.

In another week, I’ll be transplanting them outdoors in flower containers.

Alpino Early Lime Saxifrage

This Alpino Early Lime Saxifrage is a perennial that blooms from late winter to early spring. The creamy petals with the lime green center are so pretty.

Hopefully, I’ll add more spring home decor throughout the home in the next couple of weeks.

  1. Im so glad you are feeling better. I love your blog and look forward to it every week. As for Spring, I live in the Buffalo NY area. We have had snow up to the sky and this week doesnt look any better. We had a huge storm just before Thanksgiving, and 7 ft. at Christmas so Christmas was postponed for a week. It hit a day before Christmas Eve. The kids were so scared Santa wasnt coming. What a mess. I hope everyone who reads this knows we are making a mess of our enviroment and need to fix it RIGHT NOW. Im not being political, just scared what we are leaving for our kids. Thanks Km for all you wonderful posts.

    1. Thank you, Kim. You have had a brutal winter. I remember following along around Christmas and couldn’t believe what I saw. You don’t need to be political to care about the environment. It is really scary these days. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and being here.

I’m so glad you’re recovering but I know it’s been hard. I hope you recover quickly. Wow can’t believe that snow.
