The holidays are such a special time when our homes come alive with twinkle lights, laughter, and tradition. For me, it’s all about creating lasting memories while surrounding ourselves with things that make us smile —from treasured flea-market finds to newer pieces that just fit our cottage style.

Easy Ways to Mix Old and New Christmas Decor

Mixing vintage and modern Christmas decor is all about creativity and balance. Here are some simple ways to blend the two styles beautifully — no design degree required.

How Do You Mix Old and New Christmas Decor?

If you want to take your decorating a step further, keep these simple ideas in mind:

Think of your home’s color palette as the foundation for your holiday decorating. A neutral base — whites, creams, soft grays — lets both old and new pieces shine. Then layer in color through greenery, ornaments, and textiles for warmth and personality.

Create impact by displaying like with like. A shelf lined with both vintage and new Santa mugs, or a mantel sprinkled with bottlebrush trees from different eras, instantly feels curated and collected.

Aim for about 80% of one style and 20% of the other. If your space already leans vintage, add just a few modern pieces to freshen it up—or vice versa. The mix keeps your holiday look balanced and interesting.

Give your vintage decor new life by using it in creative ways. A stack of antique bowls can hold ornaments or greenery, and an old silver tray becomes the perfect base for candles.

I even tuck vintage silverware or ornaments under a glass cloche for a charming vignette.

Color is your best friend when blending styles. Choose a palette that connects your pieces — whether that’s classic red and green, cozy neutrals, or muted pastels. Patterns like plaid or gingham can beautifully bridge the gap between traditional and modern decor.

Less really is more. I love my collections, but since our 1920 cottage is only 1,600 square feet, I’ve learned to rotate decor each year. Curate your holiday pieces and give everything room to breathe. It makes your favorite items stand out.

Small, styled groupings, or vignettes, are perfect for mixing eras. Combine a vintage brass candlestick with a sleek modern vase or pair an antique mirror with a minimalist wreath. These little displays tell your holiday story in such a personal way.

Layering is what makes your Christmas decor feel cozy and lived-in. Combine glass ornaments with wood, metal, and fabric textures. A mix of shiny and matte finishes adds instant depth.

Fresh greenery, pinecones, holly berries, and twigs will always tie everything together. Nature doesn’t follow trends, which is why these timeless touches make both modern and vintage pieces feel at home.

I love tucking sprigs of cedar into wreaths and garlands for that classic Christmas scent.

My Favorite Vintage Christmas Decor to Incorporate

Adding vintage pieces instantly gives your home a story. Here are a few of my favorite finds to mix into holiday decor:

Shiny Brite ornaments, mercury glass balls, or anything with a little wear and sparkle — these treasures bring instant nostalgia to the tree. Try pairing them with new glass ornaments in complementary colors.

You can never have too many! Whether they’re faded from age or bright and new, bottlebrush trees create whimsical charm. Line them on a mantel or gather them under a cloche for a vintage-meets-modern moment.

Use old mixing bowls or silver trays to hold ornaments, pinecones, or candles. They make simple centerpieces feel extra special.

From ceramic figurines to old-fashioned mugs, vintage Santas add character and a cheerful touch. Display them alongside newer pieces to keep things playful.

Benefits of Mixing Vintage With Your Existing Christmas Decor

I’ve never found a flea market find I didn’t like, and looking at the vintage-style decor in our 1920s house, I’m sure it is very apparent.

But I also have many modern pieces. When I have a hard time finding true vintage options, I’m a big fan of reproductions, like vintage-inspired signs and Santa mugs.

Mixing vintage items with your traditional holiday decor has many advantages. Follow along for some of my favorite reasons to consider blending these two decorating styles in your home.

Every vintage item has a story. Maybe it’s your grandmother’s ornament or a flea-market find that made you smile. Displaying them keeps those memories alive and gives your home heart.

Repurposing and reusing vintage decor is not only charming — it’s also eco-friendly. It keeps old treasures out of landfills and encourages more mindful decorating.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to create a cozy Christmas home.

Thrift stores, antique shops, and flea markets are full of affordable vintage finds. And when you can’t find true vintage, reproductions or handmade pieces can have the same nostalgic feel.

Pair your vintage treasures with modern touches that make life easier, such as LED Christmas lights, remote-controlled candles, or battery-operated garlands. You get all the charm without the hassle.

Vintage and modern don’t have to match — that’s the beauty of it. The mix feels authentic and collected. Whether you’re decorating a beach cottage or a modern farmhouse, this blend adds soul and personality.

Does Christmas Decor Have to Match?

Christmas decor does not have to match when you’re mixing vintage and modern elements. It’s about showcasing your unique style and creativity, and you don’t need to create a matching or coordinated look—I try not to!

As you can see in the photo above, I’m sharing several vintage collections on my shelf that don’t necessarily match but still tell a story.

At the end of the day, your Christmas decor should make you feel happy, cozy, and inspired. Mixing old and new is a fun, creative way to express your personality while keeping your home feeling festive and welcoming.

Don’t worry about following strict rules or making everything match. If it feels right to you, that’s what matters most.

So go ahead — hang those shiny vintage ornaments next to your new glass baubles, light your favorite candles, and let your home glow with that perfect mix of nostalgia and holiday cheer.

I always love seeing a peek into your cozy cottage. Everything looks so beautiful styled for the holidays. I especially love your open shelves. 5. Kim, I am like you. Love to mix in vintage with my modern items. I love your rolling pin with the aqua. There was just a mishap yesterday with my vintage rolling pin. Your home is beautiful for the holiday. A perfect blend of the old and new.
