Creating a beautiful Easter tablescape each year with fabulous spring flowers is so much fun for me.

A bouquet of fresh flowers, including fresh tulips, daffodils, and ranunculus flower stems, is an excellent addition to any Easter celebration.

My theme for last year was an Easter garden party where I focused on potted flowering plants and spring bulbs for my centerpiece. The Easter table settings were created with a color palette of yellow and green.

I replaced the yellow with pink flowers this year and loved this color palette.

Here are just a few reasons why using cabbage as a vase for your flowers in the center of your table for Easter and the entire spring season is a fabulous idea:

  • A green cabbage vase can be used to contrast bright flowers.
  • Its unique texture adds dimension to a centerpiece, primarily if you use savoy cabbage.
  • Cabbage is an unexpected and unique shape that can provide a special touch and creative look to a tablescape centerpiece.
  • This vegetable is a versatile and eco-friendly material that can be reused and repurposed after the event has ended.
  • It’s a creative way to incorporate fresh produce into the centerpiece, adding a vibrant and natural element to the arrangement.

Creating a cabbage vase for your flowers as an Easter centerpiece is easier than you might think. Here are the easy steps to make this beautiful centerpiece for a spring Easter gathering.

Pick Your Flowers First

After determining your color scheme, pick the flowers you want for your cabbage arrangement.

My floral collection for this Easter tablescape included bunches of flowers from the local grocery store, which were surprisingly fresh and beautiful. Hydrangeas, stock, and pink baby roses were my blooms of choice.

Tip

Always carry a bucket in your car, so if you buy flowers on a whim, add water and place the flowers in it to keep hydrated. I would have never made it home without the hydrangeas wilting otherwise.

Choose Cabbage That Will Compliment Your Flowers

Pick the type of cabbage that will complement your flower selection. I chose red cabbage (purple) and savoy, which have a more distinct texture.

A large head of cabbage is the best choice for your floral centerpiece. The bigger the cabbage heads, the better.

First, ensure the cabbage head is clean and ready to use as a vase.

Remove the outer loose layers of your cabbage and save any that aren’t wilted. You’ll use them later to reattach with floral pins after you hollow out your cabbage and add spring florals.

Trace around your glass jar and cut around the center of your cabbage with a serrated or paring knife.

hollowing out the cabbage middle

Hollow out the cabbage enough to place a glass or small mason jar inside as a vase to hold your flowers.

After cutting through the top of the cabbage, flip the cabbage over and cut through the bottom of the cabbage to meet in the middle.

You can leave the bottom of your cabbage intact but level it out so it sits flat.

Fill a mason jar or glass with water and a floral preservative and set it into the hollowed cabbage.

Add your blooms to create a beautiful flower vase.

Use the outer loose leaves you saved initially and reattach them with floral pins to hide the vase and the gap between the cabbage and flowers.

My three green vintage spritzer bottles add even more bright spring color to my pretty table. I finished the centerpiece with Easter decor, such as a beloved bunny or two, and decorative eggs.

Easter place setting

I bought some new spring dishes from Williams Sonoma for my Easter table setting, but they arrived a few days late due to weather issues. They would have looked amazing with my DIY cabbage vase.

So, I decided to keep the place settings simple and let the centerpiece be the real star of the show. This is what I used:

  • Galvanized chargers – HomeGoods
  • White dishes – Home Goods
  • Jadeite plates – Walmart, The Pioneer Woman
  • Gold flatware – Target
  • Green floral napkins – HomeGoods
  • Green glasses – Antique Mall
  • Spring nest with eggs – so long ago, I can’t remember
