Moody Christmas Cottage Tour: Mixing Old and New
This year I went somewhere new with this Christmas Cottage tour.
Instead of my usual coastal greens and blues, the cottage is dressed in chocolate brown, burgundy, navy, black, cream, olive, and moss. The colors run from the living room right into the kitchen, and the whole open space feels calmer and warmer.
I planned to keep the kitchen traditional. That didn’t last. A few ribbons and some deeper colors later, the moody look had moved in there too.

What Is Moody Christmas Decor?

Moody Christmas decor uses deeper, softer colors, warm low lighting, and natural textures instead of bright whites and lots of sparkle. It isn’t as dark or dramatic as it sounds.

In a cottage, it looks like regular cottage style, just a little more grown-up with fewer pastels and more earthy warmth. Try dried hydrangeas, velvet ribbon, aged metals, layered greenery, and vintage pieces mixed with a few modern ones. It feels like an evening with the candles lit and a Christmas playlist on.
What are Moody Christmas Colors?

Moody Christmas colors are deeper and more muted than classic red and green:

Layered together, they feel warm and a little old-world without looking dated.
The Living Room: A Moody, Garden-Inspired Christmas

Three Moody Christmas Trees

There are three trees in the living room this year. Each one is a little different, and they all share the same palette.
The Main Tree: Velvet Ribbon and Dried Hydrangeas

The main tree, closest to the kitchen, is dressed in chocolate brown, navy, burgundy, black, and cream, with a few touches of olive.

It’s more dramatic than I’m used to, but it still feels right at home in a little cottage.

I tucked in plenty of dried hydrangeas from the garden.

They soften the darker colors and bring a bit of summer inside, resting until next year.

Velvet ribbon in coordinating shades adds warmth and texture, and a few faux branches and leaves give it a just-picked look.

It has that in-between feeling, where there’s still a little autumn outside, but the twinkle lights are on inside.

A burgundy plaid throw tucked inside the woven tree collar adds color at the base.

The wooden rocking horse in front of the tree has a big velvet bow. Such a small thing, and I love it.

Gifts are wrapped in black-and-cream paper with matching ribbon and tags.

The Flocked Pencil Tree: Vintage Pink and Little Birds

Across the room was another flocked pencil tree in the same palette with its own personality.

I didn’t have enough burgundy ornaments for this tree, so I added a few vintage pink ones.

They brought in the prettiest soft shimmer.

White balls, a couple of little birds, burlap poinsettias, and mini faux pinecone branches at the top finish it off.
The Hanging Basket Tree

And then there’s the little tree in the hanging basket on the wall, proof you can tuck a Christmas tree just about anywhere. (It does have twinkle lights. They just didn’t photograph well.)

Coffee Table Vignette with a Portuguese Fishing Float

The trees aren’t the only stars of the room.

On the coffee table, I tucked dried hydrangeas into a Portuguese fishing float I found at Red Plantation in Poulsbo.

Then I added a glass cloche with a wooden house and bottlebrush trees underneath.
A Small Corner Vignette

There isn’t much spare surface in the living room, but this corner always gets a vignette.

I kept it simple with candles, vintage books, bottlebrush trees, and an old tin of greenery.

My favorite wooden dough bowl is filled with garden greenery and extra ornaments.

And a brown and black nutcracker, of course.
Cozy Textiles

I kept textiles simple and neutral this year, letting the darker colors lead the way. Chunky knit throws are draped over the leather couch, the chairs, and the window seat.
One of my favorite pieces is the ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas canvas hanging from the mirror above the sofa.

I never found pillows that matched the look I wanted, so I used just two… a cream Christmas tree pillow on the vintage chair, and my long “Ho Ho Ho” lumbar on the couch.
Spode Christmas Dishes in the Black Cabinet

Next to the kitchen, a black glass-front cabinet holds my Spode Christmas dishes. The set belonged to a good friend’s grandmother, and this is the first time I’ve shared it.

The Spode “Christmas Tree” pattern behind the glass adds a soft pop of color against the black cabinet.

Even with all the deeper colors, the living room is still a place to put your feet up and look at the lights for a while.

The Kitchen: Unexpectedly Moody

Once I started decorating, the moody colors drifted in from the living room.

The kitchen still feels like a cottage kitchen, just a little deeper and warmer, and I like it even more than I expected.
Garland to Connect the Rooms

A faux Norfolk pine garland and a bay leaf garland hang across the opening between the two rooms, with moody ornaments tucked in.

It ties the kitchen to the living room.
Brown and Red Transferware on the Open Shelves

I left some of my fall brown-and-white transferware on the open shelves and mixed it with red-and-white Christmas pieces. One small change, and the kitchen matched the living room.

The darker brown balances the classic red and white, and it’s a little unexpected.
Ribbon on Everything

Ribbon did most of the work in here.

Burgundy ribbon and a bit of greenery on the pendant lights over the table brought in the same deep color as the living room.

I also tied small bows onto some of the dishes on the open shelves and around a few serving pieces. A little bow goes a long way.
Plaid on the Chairs

Red, green, black, and cream plaid throws are draped over the chair backs.

I wish they were more burgundy than true red, but once everything was styled, they worked.

The pattern grounds the darker colors.
A Pink and Red Poinsettia

My centerpiece highlights a poinsettia from Trader Joe’s with red and soft pink bracts.

It’s subtle in photos and gorgeous in person, and it brightens the table just enough.
Greenery on the Island

On the kitchen island, I put together a simple arrangement with greenery from Trader Joe’s, mixing textures and shades of green with a bowl of pears.

How to Get the Moody Christmas Look

Moody Christmas Decor FAQ

Moody Christmas palettes use burgundy, chocolate brown, navy, olive, moss green, and black, softened with cream and warm neutrals. Some add soft rose or blush. The overall look is warm, muted, and nature-inspired.
Balance deep colors with cream, warm lighting, and natural textures. Add dried florals, glass ornaments, soft greenery, and a few reflective pieces. Layer darker colors in rather than painting a whole room dark.
Yes. Brown and burgundy pair well with classic red and white, especially transferware, plaid, and poinsettias. Keep the red to a few spots so it reads as an accent.
Choose three or four colors, such as brown, navy, burgundy, and cream. Wrap the tree in velvet ribbon, tuck in dried hydrangeas or faux leaves, and use matte and glass ornaments. Warm white lights work best.
Deep, nature-inspired palettes like burgundy and chocolate brown have been popular in recent seasons, but they are rooted in old-world and vintage Christmas looks, so they don’t date quickly. Many of the pieces work for fall too.
Final Thoughts

This year felt like a good mix of old comforts and new ideas. Going deeper with color, mixing textures, and letting the living room and kitchen each do their own thing while still feeling connected reminded me that decorating doesn’t have to follow rules.
It just has to feel like home.
If you’re drawn to moodier colors, classic cottage, or a mix of both, I hope you found an idea or two. Share it with a friend who loves Christmas tours as much as we do.
Wishing you a warm and peaceful holiday season from our little cottage by the water.
Until next time,
Happy decorating,
