Saltwater Sounds: Forward Motion at Home and in the Garden

Welcome To This Week’s Saltwater Sounds…

A collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. Here, I share everything happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what to look forward to on the blog, and the inspiration I’ve found throughout the week.

You know those weeks when everything just starts clicking?

Between seedlings growing stronger each day, catching up on small home projects I’ve been wanting to tackle, and real progress on our bathroom project, it’s been one of those quiet “okay, we’re getting there” kind of weeks.

Nothing dramatic, just steady, happy progress.

brown-and-white vintage transferware in the kitchen

As promised, I’m finally sharing the vintage pieces I brought home last week.

I always love bringing in older pieces with a little patina, a little history, and a great story.

If you remember our boat trip to La Conner last September, my hubby and I took a bike ride to Christianson’s Nursery and found some really pretty (but expensive) brown-and-white vintage transferware pieces. I have been loving them in our cottage kitchen.

So, when I found three more pieces a couple of weeks ago while vintage shopping, I snatched them right up after getting a pretty good deal.

I’ve found a place on the open shelving for one of my finds, but I still have to work harder at placing the others.

I found this great piece from Italy that I’m looking forward to using seasonally.

stained glass vintage window

This stained glass window caught my eye at the antique mall. There were actually two of them, but I don’t have the wall space for both. I have no idea where I’m going to put it yet. Any ideas?

I’ll keep tweaking and rearranging (because when have I ever not?), but that’s half the fun.

An Early Spring in the Garden

Some pretty blooms are making their debut this winter. First, the purple crocuses are looking bright and beautiful in the cottage garden.

Another highlight this week was my first hyacinth sighting. I was a little worried that we may have thrown the bulbs away by accident since we were reworking that particular garden bed last fall, so seeing these blooms made me even happier.

Greenhouse Gardening

The seeds we’ve already sown are looking good.

This is the first time I’m starting herbs and most vegetables from seed, so I’m really curious to see how they do in the greenhouse vs. buying starts from the nursery.

Each morning, I do a quick check in the greenhouse to see what needs watering or a tray rotation, or the humidity dome removed after they’ve germinated.

The eggplant, statice, and echinacea are off to a solid start. We start the zinnias, cosmos, and marigolds in another week or two. Things will start getting a bit tight in the greenhouse soon.

Brightening Up the Cottage With Spring Flowers

With the chilly temps still hanging around, I thought it would brighten up the cottage by adding a few spring flowers to the kitchen.

I love putting plants in vintage containers, baskets, or even an old galvanized bucket for a charming cottage look.

Alpino™ Early Lime Saxifrage is an early-flowering variety with pretty white flowers and prominent lime-green centers, and can bloom for up to 10 weeks.

It’s so fun when we can add an indoor touch of spring to a gloomy winter day, isn’t it?

Bathroom | Closet Project Update

new built-in cabinet in the bathroom

We are so close to the finish line on the bathroom project.

The built-in cabinet is installed, and I’m loving it! We have so much space in the cupboards below. It’s almost like having 8 medicine cabinets in one place.

There are still two glass cabinet doors to hang and hardware to install. Once that’s finished, I’ll tweak the styling and pare things back. I tend to put everything out at first and then remove pieces until it feels balanced.

The closet drawers and shelving should be installed next week, so I’m hoping to share the full reveal next Sunday.

It’s amazing how much calmer a home feels when everything has a place.
