Saltwater Sounds: One Step Closer to Spring

Welcome To This Week’s Saltwater Sounds…

A collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. Here, I share everything happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what to look forward to on the blog, and the inspiration I’ve found throughout the week.

March is here, which feels absolutely amazing!

We are officially one step closer to spring…only 19 days to go. Not that I’m counting, though.

Perfect Gardening Weather

The weather has been really beautiful these past several days, and I can’t tell you what a difference that sunshine makes to my mood.

I was able to spend most of Friday out in the garden, soaking up some much-needed vitamin D and finally checking a few projects off my list.

It felt so good to be outside, hands in the dirt again.

National Old Stuff Day – March 2nd

Apparently, tomorrow is National Old Stuff Day, and I kind of love this idea.

This is the day to shake things up. It’s a reminder to look at your daily routines and ask, “Is there a better way”?

Maybe it’s rearranging a space, trying a new garden layout, taking a different route on your walk, or finally organizing that drawer you keep avoiding.

For me, it’s as easy as stepping outside when I’d normally stay in.

Force Blooming Spring Branches Indoors

My forsythia branches indoors are in full bloom, but here’s the surprising part…they’re actually pushing out tiny green leaves at the top of the stems.

I’ve never seen that happen before while forcing branches! It feels like a little science experiment happening right in my living room.

lilacs just beginning to bud outdoors

And when I looked closely at the lilac tree on a daily garden walk yesterday, I noticed tiny buds forming. That was all the encouragement I needed. I’m going to cut a few stems and try forcing lilac branches next. Fingers crossed it works.

Things are already starting to really change in the cottage garden each week.

The white clematis is blooming, hellebores are still showing off, and I’m spotting crocuses and a few early daffodils brightening up the beds.

Every day, there seems to be something new to notice.

raised beds with rows of daffodil bulbs not yet bloomed

Here are a few raised beds I planted daffodil bulbs in last fall. They are going to be so pretty when they bloom, and I can’t wait to bring them inside to enjoy.

artichoke growing in the February garden

I decided to grow a few artichoke plants last summer. We never took them out of their beds, and this is what they look like now.

I actually grew them as decorative stems for flower arrangements. They have a really pretty purple flower on the head, but that’s not what is happening in the garden right now!

That alone feels like a small victory.

Next week we’ll start sowing zinnias, cosmos, and so much more. It’s about to get busy in there, and I love being in there, making things happen.
