Summer Garden Magazine Photoshoot – Behind the Scenes
The day finally came! My cottage garden was photographed for a national magazine. I thought sharing the day with you and showing you some behind-the-scenes shots of my summer garden magazine photoshoot would be fun!

Meet Photographer Jay Wilde
Here is a shot of my new friend and talented photographer, Jay Wilde. It’s amazing how well you get to know someone after spending an entire day together taking pictures. Of course, we were socially distancing the entire time of the garden photoshoot.
Having my home and garden featured in a national magazine has always been a dream of mine. It was the reason I first started an Instagram account!
The weather has been very unusual this year. We never saw a lot of summer sun, which slowed the growing process for my flowers and vegetables.
This view of the dahlias completely differed from last year’s tall and spectacular blooms. These were very pretty but never reached their full potential.
Summer Garden Tour
I thought I would take you on a summer garden tour, days before the magazine photoshoot. Luckily, the tide was in at the time of the shoot, so there was more water in the bay to see.
The snapdragons were the star of the show, along with the greenhouse, of course. Timing is everything. These summer blooms were fading and losing their petals three days later.
I love my new copper birdbath from Good Directions. It is such a gorgeous addition to my cottage garden.
Here’s a view of the white picket fenced cutting garden overlooking the greenhouse.
My husband captured this moment as I was having my picture taken in the summer garden, surrounded by flowers, during the magazine photoshoot.
I am so in love with this gorgeous birdhouse.
My potting bench sits among the raised beds in the picket fence flower garden. I would love to add a sink to it one day.
These coneflowers are one of my favorites in the cottage garden. I love the color. I did see some white coneflowers in another garden the other day. They are definitely on my list for next year!
Here are some of my flower containers sitting on the greenhouse steps.
I hope you enjoyed my behind-the-scenes summer garden magazine photoshoot. And of course the garden tour. This was probably the best time of the year to show my garden. It was when the majority of summer flowers were in bloom. And now…onto fall.

I am seriously so excited for you, Kim, I can hardly stand it! I know this was a huge accomplishment and very well deserved too. Your home and gardens always look so peaceful and inviting. I know you’re going to give so many people some much needed inspiration with your love of house and home. Gah – I can’t believe it! I’m so excited for you! Hugs, CoCo
Thank you CoCo! You are just the sweetest. It was very exciting, and has been an incredible year. Our home is the the current fall issue of Cottages and Bungalows as well. I am pinching myself!
Congratulations on earning a magazine feature! Your garden and views are spectacular! Every plant is so healthy looking, I envy your green thumb.
Thank you for your kind words Allyson! I really appreciate it!
So exiciting! Congratulations!
Thank You Amber!
Oh Congratulations Kim!! It was only a matter of time, and I’m so happy it was sooner rather than later!! Your garden is so gorgeous – you’re going to have a zillion new fans! ♥ Thanks for sharing it with all of us!
Thank you for the sweet compliments Barbara!
Wonderful garden inspiration!
Thank you so much Julie!
Just beautiful! Congratulations on the feature in Cottage Style magazine. I scrolled through to look at the photos a few times, I enjoyed them so much. You have done such an amazing job with your gardens and the love that you have for gardening shows in all of its beauty! I live in the PNW also, in the Portland region, so our climates are very similar but we can have some very hot summer days. Many of my flowers don’t bloom continually as yours do, do you fertilize them often or have a particular care routine that keeps them looking so gorgeous?! I would love any tips if you wouldn’t mind sharing! Thank you!
Thank you for all the kind words Lisa. I start out the spring season by adding fish compost to my beds. I have been doing this for the past 5 years or so, and that is basically all I’ve needed. I will admit that I am a bit lazy when it comes to fertilizer, and so far I have gotten away with it. We have amazing soil in our front yard, the backyard is not as good. I do add a time released fertilizer to my annuals when I plant them. I am working on a blog post series that goes through the process of getting ready for the next garden season. I am hoping to start that in September.
Kim, your home and garden are magical! Simply stunning! I love all the color and textures throughout. You have so many points of interest. I know it had to be very exciting have a home and garden photo shoot for a national magazine. I love your copper birdbath. Your husband did a great job photographing you in your garden too. Thank you so much for being an inspiration and sharing your beautiful home and garden.

Thank you Debbie! I can tell you that it is Cottage Style Magazine sometime in the spring. Wishing you the same my friend!
That is the most gorgeous garden and setting I’ve seen, ever!! Definitely worthy of a magazine spread. Congratulations!
Thank you so much Maryla. You are so sweet!
So amazing! If I have ever seen a magazine worthy garden, it’s yours! I can only imagine the hours of care to keep it looking beautiful! Congratulations on fulfilling a dream!
Thank you so much for the kind words! It was definitely a dream come true.
I am so proud of you. What an accomplishment having your garden featured in a national magazine. Being a gardener myself I know how grueling the pampering can be. Too much of anything can ruin all your efforts. Your photos were such a bright start to our Sunday morning. Living in Phoenix, AZ we hold close to our hearts the wonderful times we’ve had in your area. Desert gardening is SO VERY different than yours. I dream of your garden colors. Stay strong and safe.
Thank you so much Sherry. Your comments really made my day! I can imagine how different desert gardening is. I am not a fan of the heat, so I don’t know how well I would do. Again, thank you for your kindness. You put a big smile on my face!
Would love to hear your remedy for grasshoppers. Love your husband’s shot of you. Lovely gardens. Love your gardens.
Thank you for all your kind words Patricia. I have not had any issues with grasshoppers here, but I have read that if you dust the plants leaves with flour, it can cause grasshoppers to starve by gumming up their mouth.
What an amazing opportunity to have your gardens professional photographed. Your hard work is certainly paying off! Congratulations ????
Thank you so much! It was an incredible opportunity for sure.
Kim these photos are just breathtaking, the one your husband took is just lovely.
Thank you for the suggestions for my grasshopper problem I think dusting with flour is working .
I found several dead grasshoppers beneath my window boxes, I gave them a nice memorial TeeHee
Thank you for the compliment! I am so glad to hear that this remedy may have worked! Someone else just asked me about grasshoppers, and I gave her the same information. Now I feel better about it! I hope you’re having a good weekend.
I am so excited for you!! Your yard is just so spectacular!! I pinned this to multiple boards! We have been having such hot weather here and some of my flowers do not like it. I wish we could have some of your rain! Thank you so much for highlighting my tablescape in your email today ????
Hugs,
Karin
Thank you Karin! I appreciate all the love. I was actually so excited to use your gorgeous tablescape as my post feature picture. You made my newsletter so much prettier! I hope you get some rain soon!
