Welcome to Saltwater Sounds, a collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. Here, I share everything happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what’s to come, and the inspiration I’ve found from other bloggers around the web.

This and That

Sweater weather, hot drinks, and cozy nights—hello, November!

Goodbye to daylight saving time. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that the sun in the Seattle area will set at 4:48 PM this evening. I did like my extra hour of sleep this morning, though.

Sounds like a great excuse to put a few strings of lights indoors this weekend, wouldn’t you say?

While sidelined from my usual gardening and decorating activities, I’m inspired by the beauty around me. This week, the autumn leaves are absolutely gorgeous.

November is the perfect time to cozy up your home as the days get shorter and colder. Here are five of my favorite ways to bring those warm, inviting vibes indoors this season!

living room decorated for fall

1. Layer in Warm Textiles: Think blankets, throws, and pillows in soft, textured fabrics like wool, faux fur, and chunky knits. Drape a cozy throw over the couch, add a few more pillows to your bed, and you’ve instantly made the space feel snug.

2. Add Ambient Lighting: Lighting plays a huge role in creating a cozy atmosphere. Add some warm-toned string lights, lanterns, or candles to your space. A few well-placed flameless candles can give you that glow without the flame, especially if you want something low-maintenance.

3. Bring in Seasonal Scents: Nothing says “cozy” quite like the scent of fall and winter spices. Use candles, diffusers, or stovetop potpourri with fragrances like cinnamon, clove, vanilla, or apple cider to fill your home with seasonal warmth.

4. Incorporate Natural Elements: Bring a bit of the outdoors in with seasonal greenery like eucalyptus, pine, or even dried branches in a vase. Small touches like pinecones, dried flowers, and branches can add a cozy rustic charm and make you feel closer to nature. If you have a fireplace, stocking up on wood or placing a few logs decoratively can really amplify the feel.

5. Create a Cozy Coffee or Hot Cocoa Station: Set up a dedicated spot for hot drinks, complete with mugs, cocoa powder, marshmallows, and your favorite teas. Not only is it practical, but it also adds a charming, seasonal touch to your kitchen. Place a few fall-themed decorations on the counter nearby to make the setup extra festive.

Christmas displays at the vintage store

I know the natural progression after Halloween is Thanksgiving when it comes to the holidays. But for holiday shopping and getting what you want before it sells out, I’m starting to share Christmas and all things holiday decor.

I’m trying to plan how and when I’ll decorate for Christmas this year. It will be a bit tricky because I won’t be able to do it on my own this year.

Do you decorate for the winter holidays at the same time every year, or does it depend on how you feel each year?
