Saltwater Sounds: One Last Sunny Day in the Garden

Welcome To This Week’s Saltwater Sounds…

A collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. Here, I share everything happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what to look forward to on the blog, and the inspiration I’ve found throughout the week.

This and That

Sweater weather, hot drinks, and cozy nights—hello, November!

And goodbye to daylight saving time. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that the sun in the Seattle area will set at 4:52 PM this evening. I did like my extra hour of sleep this morning, though.

Sounds like a great excuse to put a few strings of lights indoors this weekend, wouldn’t you say?

This weekend brought us another atmospheric river, complete with gusty winds and plenty of that classic Pacific Northwest rain. I felt so bad for the kiddos out trick-or-treating Friday night — talk about dedication!

Today, though, we finally got a break in the weather, and I’ll be soaking it up while I can. It’s the only sunny day in the forecast for a while, so I’m making the most of it in the garden.

Wrapping Up the Garden Season

We’re in full garden transition mode over here. Today’s list includes:

  • Planting the last of the spring bulbs
  • Dividing the asters (they’ve done so well this year!)
  • Moving a few plants around to get ready for next year’s garden

I’ve decided to relocate all the peony bushes growing throughout the garden to the front fence along the road. I think grouping them together will make such a pretty statement in the spring when they bloom.

mulching leaves in the garden

There’s still plenty of cleanup to do — raking and mulching the fallen leaves, cutting back a few tired perennials, and checking for drainage issues after all this rain.

I’m actually looking forward to it. There’s something peaceful about working outside in the crisp November air, knowing the garden is tucking itself in for winter.

Weekly Garden Tip

If you’re still tidying up before winter, here’s your reminder to label the spots where you planted bulbs and dahlia tubers while it’s still fresh in your mind.

You’ll thank yourself in spring when you’re not accidentally digging them up during early weeding or replanting!

“Welcome, November! May this month be as comforting as a warm blanket.”

Halloween’s Over… and I’m Slowly Moving Into Christmas

Christmas decorations at a local store

Let’s be honest—it’s never too early for a little twinkle light inspiration.

I’m bringing out the Christmas trees this week and starting to ease into holiday decorating. It’s always fun to get those creative wheels turning again and imagine how the cottage will look all dressed up for the season.

I know most people like to linger a little longer in Thanksgiving mode before jumping into Christmas, but when it comes to holiday shopping (and making sure things don’t sell out!), I’m spreading a little cheer early this year.

How about you? Do you decorate at the same time every year—or do you wait for that “I can’t resist anymore” feeling to kick in before the bins come out?
