Saltwater Sounds Weekly: Taking Advantage of the Winter Days

This and That…

I don’t know about you but I have definitely been taking advantage of these dreary winter days.

Just so you know, I’ve never been a fan of the winter months.

It could be the gardener in me, but I like to be outdoors, feeling the sun shining and hearing the birds chirping.

But I’ve actually shifted my attitude this month. I’m looking at the next couple of months as an opportunity for progress.

I had a great week with garden planning, shopping, and working on some home projects.

shopping for home décor

A Day of Shopping

I went shopping and to lunch with a friend last Monday. We went to Compass Rose in the Proctor District.

shopping for home décor

I always love visiting this store for ideas. It’s a bit over my budget but window shopping is always fun.

They have the prettiest decorative pillows.

What I like most about this store is the green and blue color combination. I’m loving the coastal feel.

antique and vintage furniture

We also went to the South Tacoma Antique Mall for some thrifted finds.

I found some ironstone and silver pieces at a really great deal.

I’ll share the rest of the shopping experience in my next monthly vintage blog post.

blue armoire

Around Our Cottage

Have you ever started a project by accident?

I did just that when I brought the vacuum into my studio and hit my armoire. I little bit of paint chipped off and that’s when I noticed how easy it would be to literally peel off the paint in strips.

I’ve wanted to change the color of this armoire for years, but always secretly wished it had never been painted at all.

So I started peeling away. The sides came off so easily. I was beyond excited!

peeling paint on the floor

As you can see, this was a spur-of-the-moment whim, so of course, I didn’t put down anything to keep the paint peels from getting all over the floor.

Unfortunately, when I got to the corners and trim, things started taking a turn. Looks like I’m going to have to strip the rest. So for now it’s a two-toned cabinet.

I’ll share the results next week.

sweet pea seedlings in the Greenhouse

In the Greenhouse

I’m going to be sowing the sweet pea seeds on Monday, followed by starting geranium plants from cuttings.

Can’t wait to keep you posted.

  1. Enjoyed that shopping trip Kim! When I lived in the PNW I never visited the Tacoma Antique Mall … what an oversight. It must feel good to be back in the greenhouse. I’m excited to to seeing your garden come back to life this spring. Have the best week! xo

  2. Hey Kim,
I’ve been stuck in the house for about 2 weeks so I’m so over winter and being sick. I need sunshine but it’s looking doubtful today. Thank you for sharing my post. You are the best.

  3. Thanks for sharing my clay heart ornaments Kim, I really appreciate it. What you did with the armoire is exactly something I would do. It’s like….”let’s just see……oh well, now I have to do it!”. Hope you have a great week!

  4. Kim, thank you so much for sharing my French bistro table and chair redo! So many great things in today’s post. I LOVE that English country kitchen-oh my! 5. I am trying to lean into winter more this year too. It helps that I have a couple trips planned in February and one in March. Things can get really quiet here in the winter — sometimes too quiet! Good luck stripping the paint off your armoire. Always a job, but I know it will look great when it is done! Have a great start to your week!
