Random This & That

Hello there! HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SUMMER! And Happy Father’s Day!

I took some time off from the blog to enjoy a few days of Puget Sound boating.

Saltwater Sounds boating trip

It was a rough start last Sunday as we were getting our things on board the boat for the week. We were not only unloading during the time when the heaviest amount of rain was falling that day, but it was also low tide so the ramp from the parking lot to the boat was as steep as it gets.

Let’s just say it was quite the challenge.

Saltwater Sounds kayak ride with Ollie

Every day got drier and warmer, and by Thursday, we were ready to go for Ollie’s first kayak ride. He did great by the way.

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen Jax and Lucy riding with me in my kayak. We had a lot of fun.

Here’s a picture of the Gig Harbor lighthouse as we were boating into the harbor.

Saltwater Sounds dinghy ride in Poulsbo

Our other waterfront town of choice this trip was Poulsbo. Here we are in our dinghy, coming in from our boat anchored in the harbor.

Saltwater Sounds shopping with friends

We met my girlfriends in town for shopping and lunch. We had a great day!

I’m working on sharing more trip highlights in a new blog post for next week. But in the meantime, you can see last September’s boating adventures.

In the Garden

I am SHOCKED by the amount of growth I saw in the garden, and in less than a week. Here are some of the highlights.

Saltwater Sounds sweet peas

I planted 5 varieties of sweet peas this year. Only one of them, the variety Carlotta has bloomed, but I’ll take it! They grow so quickly that I am constantly tieing them to the trellis as they get taller.

Saltwater Sounds snapdragons

My Chantilly Mix Snapdragons are starting to bloom! I can’t believe how tall they got while we were gone. I am SO GLAD we put the netting down before we left.

Here’s a picture of what they looked like last year in full bloom. WOW!

Saltwater Sounds hydrangeas

And how about those hydrangeas! They are going to be spectacular this year. I’ve had them for about 8 years and they have only been getting fabulous the last couple of years.

The best part of growing hydrangeas is drying them in the fall.

I’ve gotten many questions about how to grow hydrangeas. Morning sun is about all they can tolerate. They love the fish compost I add to the soil every year. And I personally don’t cut them back until I start seeing growth in the spring.
