Choosing the Right Location
Selecting the perfect spot for your summer barbeque helps create a comfortable experience for your guests. Here are some tips to help you choose the ideal location for your barbeque tablescape.
Assess Your Space
Patio or Deck
If you have a patio or deck, this can be ideal for your barbeque. These areas usually have seating and tables, making it easy to set up. Plus, they are typically close to the kitchen, which can be convenient for serving food and drinks.
We chose to host our Summer BBQ on the deck with views of Puget Sound and the garden flowers.
Garden or Yard
A garden setting offers a lush and scenic backdrop for your barbeque. Place your BBQ dinner table under a tree for natural shade or in an open area with a view of your favorite plants and flowers.
Poolside
If you have a pool, setting up your barbeque tablescape nearby can add a touch of relaxation. Guests can enjoy a swim before or after the meal, and the pool can be a beautiful visual feature.
Maximize Comfort and Convenience
Shade and Shelter
Use umbrellas, canopies, or pergolas to relieve the heat with adequate shade to protect your guests from the sun.
Proximity to the Grill
Set up your tablescape close enough to the grill to make serving easy but not so close that guests are overwhelmed by smoke and heat.
Access to Amenities
Choose a location near essential amenities like restrooms, the kitchen, and storage for extra supplies. This will make it easier to restock food and drinks and handle any unexpected needs quickly.
Enhance the Ambiance When Outdoor Entertaining
Natural Beauty
Choose a location that showcases the natural beauty of your surroundings. Whether it’s a blooming garden, a scenic view, or a cozy backyard nook, the right setting can enhance the overall atmosphere of your barbeque.
Decorative Elements
Blend your space’s existing features into your tablescape design. Use seasonal flowers as table decorations or the pool’s reflection as a backdrop for evening lighting.
Comfortable Seating
You should have enough seating for all your guests, and the chairs should be comfortable. Cushions, pillows, and throws add comfort and color to your setup.
Essentials for Table Place Settings
Your summer barbeque tablescape needs the right essentials. Here’s a guide to the key place-setting items you’ll need to set a table that is both pretty and practical.
Table Linens
Tablecloths
A tablecloth can set the tone for your tablescape. Choose a durable, easy-to-clean material suitable for outdoor use. Choose light, summery colors or patterns that complement your theme.
Runners
Table runners can be layered over a tablecloth or used on their own. They provide a focal point and help define the dining area.
Placemats
Placemats are decorative and functional, protecting your table from spills and heat. Select placemats that coordinate with your tablecloth or runner for a cohesive look.
Dishware
Plates
Durable, unbreakable plates are ideal for outdoor dining. Melamine, enamelware, or high-quality plastic plates come in various styles and colors to fit your theme. Consider mix-and-match patterns for a fun, eclectic vibe.
I used white dinner plates with galvanized chargers to match the galvanized metal bucket of daisies at the center of the table.
Bowls
If you’re serving sides, salads, or desserts, use matching or coordinating bowls. Smaller bowls can also be used for sauces and dips.
Serving Platters
Large serving platters are essential for presenting grilled meats, vegetables, and other dishes. Choose designs that enhance your tablescape and are easy to pass around.
Cutlery
Knives, Forks, and Spoons
Sturdy cutlery is important for a summer barbeque. Stainless steel or heavy-duty plastic cutlery is best.
Serving Utensils
Remember tongs, serving spoons, and forks for serving food. Ensure you have enough utensils for each type of dish.
Glassware
Drinking Glasses
Offer shatterproof glassware such as acrylic or Tritan for outdoor use. Have a mix of glasses for water, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages.
Mason jar glasses are a charming option for a summer beverage at any outdoor picnic or barbeque.
Wine and Cocktail Glasses
If you’re serving wine or cocktails, provide appropriate glassware. Stemless wine glasses and short, wide glasses for cocktails are practical and stylish for outdoor settings.
Pitchers and Carafes
Pitchers of water, iced tea, or lemonade make drinks easily accessible. Carafes can also serve wine or sangria.
Napkins
Cloth Napkins
Cloth napkins add a touch of class and are more eco-friendly than paper. Choose napkins that match or complement your table linens.
Napkin Rings
Napkin rings can add a decorative touch and help keep napkins neatly folded. Look for designs that reflect your theme or add a pop of color.
Condiment Holders
Salt and Pepper Shakers
Make sure salt and pepper shakers are easily accessible to all guests. Fun, themed shakers can add a playful element to your table.
Condiment Caddies
A caddy for sauces, relishes, and other condiments keeps the table organized and makes it easy for guests to help themselves.
Incorporating Natural Elements as Your Centerpiece
Using natural elements in your summer barbeque tablescape centerpiece can create a fresh and inviting vibe. Here are some ideas and tips for incorporating flowers, greenery, and other natural touches into your table setting.
Fresh Flowers
Seasonal Blooms
Fresh flowers are the anchor of this summer centerpiece. Choose blooms that are in season for the freshest and most vibrant options. Summer favorites include daisies, sunflowers, dahlias, zinnias, and hydrangeas.
Flower Arrangements
Create simple arrangements using mason jars, small vases, or even repurposed bottles. Group them for a fuller look, or scatter them along the table for a casual feel.
I love using one of my vintage galvanized buckets to show off my flowers. You can find one at just about any antique store or thrift shop.
Single Stems
What better way to take a minimalist approach than to place single stems of flowers in small bud vases or glass bottles? This can create an elegant and understated look while adding a touch of nature.
Greenery
Garlands
Use greenery garlands as table runners to add a lush, organic feel to your tablescape. Eucalyptus, ivy, or ferns work well.
Potted Plants
Small potted plants, such as succulents or herbs, can be decoration and functional elements.
Leafy Accents
Incorporate large leaves, like monstera or palm fronds, as placemats or centerpieces. These can add a tropical touch and are perfect for a summer theme.
Natural Textures
Wood Elements
Use wooden serving boards, trays, or bowls to bring a rustic, earthy vibe to your tablescape. These can be used for serving food or as decorative accents.
Wicker and Rattan
Incorporate wicker or rattan elements like placemats, chargers, or baskets to add texture and a natural feel. These materials are perfect for an outdoor setting.
Stone and Pebbles
Use smooth stones or pebbles as decorative elements or even place card holders. They can add a cool, natural touch to your table.
Edible Table Decor
Fresh Fruit
Use bowls of fresh fruit as both decoration and a healthy snack option. Citrus fruits, berries, and grapes add color and freshness to the table.
Herb Bouquets
Small bouquets of fresh herbs, such as rosemary, thyme, or mint, can be placed in small jars or tied with twine. They add a lovely fragrance and can be used by guests to garnish their plates.
Vegetable Displays
Arrange colorful vegetables like cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, and radishes in baskets or on platters.
Nature-Inspired Accents
Seashells and Sand
For a coastal theme, scatter seashells or small containers of sand along the table. These elements bring a beachy feel to your barbeque.
Feathers and Stones
Add unique natural elements like polished stones to create interest and texture. These can be placed on napkins or incorporated into centerpieces.
Lighting and Ambiance
Types of Lighting
Creating the right lighting and ambiance is essential for setting the mood of your summer barbeque, especially if your gathering grows into the evening hours. Here are some ideas and tips to ensure your tablescape is beautifully illuminated and inviting.
String Lights
String lights are a popular choice for outdoor gatherings and my personal favorite. Drape them above your dining area, wrap them around trees, or hang them along a fence to create a warm, twinkling atmosphere.
Lanterns
Lanterns add a charming, rustic touch to your tablescape. Place them on the table as centerpieces, or hang them around your outdoor space. You can use traditional candles or battery-operated LED candles.
Candles
The warm glow and soft flickering light of candles enhance the ambiance. Use votive candles, tea lights, or pillar candles in hurricane vases to protect the flame from the wind. Citronella candles can also help keep insects at bay.
Solar Lights
Solar-powered lights are eco-friendly and can be placed around the garden or along pathways. They automatically turn on as the sun sets, adding a magical glow to your setting.
Tiki Torches
For a tropical feel, tiki torches can be placed around the perimeter of your dining area. They provide light and an exotic flair, making your barbeque feel like a beach party.
Creating an Inviting Experience
Music
Soft background music can enhance the outdoor dining experience. Choose a playlist that matches the mood of your barbeque, whether it’s upbeat and lively or calm and relaxing. The volume should be low enough to hear conversations.
Comfort Items
Provide blankets or throws for guests to use as the evening cools down. This will encourage your guests to stay and enjoy the evening longer.
Color Schemes and Themes
Choosing the right color scheme and theme for your summer barbeque tablescape can set the tone for your event. A well-coordinated color palette and theme can liven up the dining experience!
I went with a blue, white, and yellow theme. The yellow color was inspired by vintage croquet balls and the centers of the daisies.

Practical Tips for a Hassle-Free Setup
Creating a beautiful and functional tablescape for your summer barbeque doesn’t have to be hard. With a few practical tips, you’ll enjoy the event as much as your guests.
Here are some efficient strategies to help you prepare.
Food and Drink Stations
Self-Serve Stations
A great way to reduce congestion at the dining table is to set up a separate table for food and drinks. This allows guests to help themselves and keeps the main table uncluttered.
Use Dispensers
Beverage dispensers are a great way to serve drinks without constant refilling. Choose cute dispensers that match your theme and fill them with water, iced tea, lemonade, or cocktails.
Label Everything
Clearly label food and drink items, especially if you have guests with dietary restrictions.
Comfort and Convenience
Keep Bugs at Bay
Use citronella candles, bug zappers, or natural repellents to keep insects away. Place them strategically around the dining area for your guests.
I use glass jars with a slice of lemon, a sprig of rosemary, and some citronella, lemon eucalyptus, or peppermint essential oils, which are the perfect recipe to help keep the mosquitos away.

Love this table Kim. The crochet balls are an adorable touch????
Loved this bright and beautiful tablescape Kim! And I guess we had the same idea about using daisies. Those are some of my summer faves.
Thank you, Michele! I was loving the fact that you used daisies in your tablescape as well. They really are the happiest flower.
Thank you for sharing on the vessels!
You.gave me a new.way to look at arrangements.
The vessel on the dining area – what size is it? Can it hold a plant from a gardening shop?
If so, what size pot do I need to.buy?
Thank you for visiting my blog! The vintage galvanized bucket measures 9.5″ (W) x 9″ (H) so I believe you could put a gallon-sized pot in it, which is usually 7 -8″. Just make sure to drill drainage holes on the bottom if the vessel does not have any.
How pretty is this table! I love the color scheme and the croquet balls are the perfect accent!
You are so sweet, Kim. Thank you!
Love your pretty blue & yellow-themed tablescape…great minds think alike! 🙂 The addition of the croquet balls is super fun and of course, I also think daisies are just so happy. We’re so glad you were able to join us this month and share your talents with our group. Pinned!

Thank you so much, Jen! It really is hard to entertain in the backyard without the view but we had to the other day to escape the 96° heat. Thanks so much for letting me be a part of the summer fun!
Kim how beautiful! I love your summer bbq table! The daisies with the blue table cloth are perfect!
Thank you, Stacy! You wouldn’t believe all the daisies I have around the garden. And they last in the house so long.
Kim,
Your outdoor table is amazing. I loved the crochet balls as part of the centerpiece. Daisy’s make me smile because they were the flowers for my wedding in 1979. I was a flower child back then. LOL. So glad you joined Supper club this month.
I can totally see your wedding with daisies. How beautiful it must have been. I can also picture you as the prettiest flower girl ever!
