Small Beach Cottage Decorating Ideas With Coastal Charm

Summer is the season when our beach cottage truly shines. With the garden blooming, Puget Sound just steps away, and the windows wide open to the sea breeze, this is when our home feels most alive.

I have a feeling I know exactly what inspired this in me. Have you ever seen Top Gun, where Maverick goes to Charlie’s house for dinner? “Sitting By the Dock of the Bay” plays in the background, they’re sitting on painted wicker furniture, and white curtains blow in the wind. That scene stuck with me for years. It was the feeling more than anything else: relaxed, breezy, right by the water. I wanted to live somewhere that felt like that.

Today, I’m sharing a room-by-room tour of how I decorate our 1920 beach cottage for summer, along with the coastal decor ideas that have worked best in our small space. Whether you’re actually on the coast or love the easygoing look of a seaside home, there’s something here for you. You don’t need a beach house to bring coastal charm in. You just need a few good ideas.

What Is Coastal Cottage Style?

Beach House pillow on the wicker chair

Coastal cottage style isn’t about anchors on every surface and a seashell in every corner. It’s about keeping things light, airy, and relaxed, with natural materials, soft ocean-inspired colors, and vintage pieces that feel collected over time rather than purchased all at once.

For me, it means crisp whites and soft blues, wicker and jute, distressed wood, and open shelves that show off things I actually love. Nothing has to match. Handmade touches, flea market finds, and fresh flowers from the garden are what make it feel personal.

The goal is a space that looks like it came together slowly. Because ideally, it did.

The hallmarks of coastal cottage style:

  • Soft shades of white, cream, blue, and sea glass green
  • Natural textures like wicker, jute, linen, and cotton
  • Weathered woods and distressed finishes
  • Open shelving, vintage finds, and casual arrangements
  • Beach-inspired accents used lightly, no theme park vibes

Coastal Living Room

pillows and throws on window seat

In our living room, I strive for a balance of cozy and coastal. It’s where we unwind after a day outside, so I keep things light and welcoming without overdoing it. Small-space decorating means showing some real restraint (sometimes it’s hard) by picking only things I love most and leaving room to breathe.

The coffee table is the easiest place to start.

A gray-and-white striped scarf I picked up in Greece a few years back became the foundation.

white slipcovered chair and coffee table

It added texture and warmth to the stark white table without feeling heavy.

From there, it’s layered with a vintage glass container filled with sand and shells, a glass float, a starfish or two, and a candle.

Aqua glass vases tucked into a round, whitewashed wicker basket add color without shouting.

seashells and starfish

Seashells, glass floats, and vintage books in coastal blues and sandy beiges are simple, budget-friendly, and easy to switch out with the seasons.

fuchsia gladiolas in vase

Nothing makes a room feel more alive in summer than fresh flowers.

cut flower garden with white picket fence and waterview

I grow a cut flower garden every season, specifically for this. My dahlias, snapdragons, sweet peas, zinnias, cosmos, strawflowers, and sunflowers all come inside at some point.

lavender in terra cotta pot

Glass bottles, Mason jars, and vintage galvanized buckets are my go-to vessels. A pot of lavender or rosemary on a windowsill works beautifully, too.

For summer, I swap out heavy wool throws and velvet pillows for soft linen and cotton in lighter tones.

Crisp white slipcovered chairs are a beach cottage staple that never goes out of style.

Wicker baskets and furniture pair beautifully with summer whites.

Light throws stay piled near the living room because even on warm Puget Sound evenings, the temperature drops once the sun goes down and we’re out on the deck.

Everything pops against them, and the space stays feeling bright and open.

Wooden oars, driftwood pieces, a vintage Puget Sound fish sign, an oversized hanging basket in the corner: these are all details that make this room feel like ours specifically, not just a coastal cottage anywhere.

Just outside the kitchen, a dark charcoal glass door cabinet stores my vintage white ironstone collection. The glass doors let it all show without taking up a single inch of counter space.

Light and Bright in the Coastal Kitchen

Small-space kitchens can still pack a punch when it comes to summer decor. Ours was transformed when we took down the wall between the kitchen and living room. Suddenly, the two spaces breathed together, and the whole cottage opened up.

The color palette here is white, anchored by blues in every shade: navy, aqua, and mid-tone.

vintage scale and yellow and white patterned bowls

Yellow accents from bowls, lemons, and window seat cushions add warmth.

basket with vintage wooden rolling pins and breadboards

It’s cheerful without being busy.

open shelving in kitchen with coastal décor

Open shelving is where coastal kitchen style really gets to shine.

blue fish dish, blue and white patterned straws, yellow bowls, and turquoise vintage piece

I mix white ironstone dishware with fish-themed dishes, blue-and-white pieces, starfish plates, and a vintage scale that’s been with me for years.

blue and white print dishtowel with white starfish plates on island

Coastal-printed dish towels, aqua glass jars, and a few seasonal touches round everything out. The shelves look curated, but everything on them actually gets used.

Our iron pipe pot rack was one of the best things we ever built. My husband and I made it together one weekend, and it’s become one of those permanent, irreplaceable parts of the house.

Vintage copper pans, colanders, wicker baskets, and dried flowers hang from it year-round.

The kitchen island is a repurposed antique dresser we found on Craigslist, topped with a piece of butcher block salvage from a Dunkin’ Donuts that was going out of business.

It’s the perfect size for our cozy kitchen, and it has more storage than anything we could have bought new.

aqua vintage kitchen cabinet

The aqua cabinet in the corner was orange when I spotted it at an antique store in Gig Harbor over twenty years ago.

aqua glass door cabinet in kitchen

It’s the boldest color I’ve ever painted a piece of furniture, and probably the best decision I’ve made decorating-wise. It’s the first thing people see when they walk in.

The glass doors show off what’s worth showing, while closed doors below hide what isn’t.

coffee station and kitchen view

We’re always thinking about how to use every inch in a 1,600-square-foot house. Just to the right of the refrigerator, in a narrow hallway between the laundry room and primary bedroom, we tucked a coffee station, with a narrow dresser for the espresso maker and a shelf above for seasonal decor.

coffee station in hallway

We recently added reclaimed wood on the hallway ceiling, which made a surprisingly big difference. Every inch has a job.

kitchen eating area with window seat

We don’t have a formal dining room, and honestly, we don’t miss it. Our eating area is in our kitchen, looking straight out to the bay.

galvanized bucket with daisies, bright patterned bowls, yellow lemons and candle on table

A rustic farmhouse table, wicker chairs, and a window seat we added a few years ago provide enough room for a good dinner party.

The extra storage drawers under the bench are a bonus for those kitchen accessories I don’t use every single day.

Bedroom With a Breezy, Coastal Feel

summer bedroom home decor with chandelier and plantation shutters

The bedrooms in our cottage stay fairly neutral all year, but I do freshen things up for summer. The changes are simple and don’t require much.

blue and white bedding and cream-colored dog

Swap out heavy bedding for breathable cotton or linen. Add pillows or a throw in soft blue, white, or sandy neutrals. Keep the window covering sheer and let the light in.

turquoise pitcher with faux flowers, vintage books and seashells on mantel

Display something small and collected, like a jar of shells, a piece of driftwood, a stem or two from the garden.

summer bedroom with plantation shutters

Our primary bedroom has pale blue walls that I absolutely love. They feel calm and cool in the summer, especially with the plantation shutters filtering the morning light.

wooden stool with vintage books, flowers, and shells inside small glass cloche

Nothing fussy, just layer in wooden stools as nightstands, vintage books stacked on a shelf, or a small glass cloche with shells inside.

pale blue wood walls and off white vintage nightstand and shutters with love sign

Linen bedding and sheer curtains do most of the heavy lifting here. Position the bed near a window if you can; waking up to natural light and the water view is a very good way to start this summer morning.

Deck, Porch, and Outdoor Spaces

deck view with outdoor furniture in greens and blues

One of the best things about living on Puget Sound is that the outdoor spaces become part of the house from late spring through early fall.

deck view with a comfy gray cushioned rattan chair, coffee table with candles and sedum, and a sunset

Our front porch and deck are where we spent most of our summer evenings, and I put real thought into how they’re set up.

Jax and Ollie claim the outdoor sofa as their own the moment the cushions go back on.

outdoor living space with blues and whites and canvas lighting fixture

Blue and white pillows, a coastal-patterned outdoor rug, and a canvas pendant lamp that holds up surprisingly well in the salt air.

outdoor living space with blues and whites

It’s the same approach as inside: comfortable, collective, and easy.

outdoor living space with blues and whites

Wicker and rattan furniture, Adirondack chairs, and comfortable slipcovered pieces are all at home on a beach cottage porch.

Cushions and throw pillows in soft blues, sandy neutrals, and nautical stripes add color and pattern without competing with the view.

outdoor living space with blues and whites

Outdoor rugs in coastal patterns or solid neutrals define the seating area and make the deck feel like a real room. Choose weather-resistant materials. They hold up much better on the water than you’d expect.

view of the bay and bistro lights glowing in th evening from the deck

Bistro lights strung overhead are, in my opinion, one of the best investments you can make for an outdoor space. The garden looks completely different at dusk when they come on.

coastal colored glass lanterns on outdoor coffee table

Solar-powered glass lanterns on the coffee table add a soft glow without the cords.

white birdbath filled with water and rocks, petunias and other flowers in containers on the stone patio

Potted herbs and flowers in galvanized buckets, terracotta, or aged planters are my favorite porch styling detail. They look beautiful and serve double duty when the herbs end up in the kitchen.

summer garden

For the garden beds and containers, I lean toward plants with blue or silver foliage like lavender, sea holly, and ornamental grasses that echo the colors of the Sound.

white ceramic bird fountain with river rock

A white ceramic birdbath near the greenhouse patio has become one of my favorite garden features. Surrounded by river rock and nestled into the planting beds, it’s the kind of detail that doesn’t require much effort but makes the whole garden feel included.

seaside coastal tablescape in the garden on the patio

We set up the garden dining area every summer for outdoor meals when the weather cooperates, which on Puget Sound means more evenings than you’d think.

A white iron round table with a glass top, a few glass floats and mason jars used as candleholders, fish-shaped napkin rings, and blue-and-white printed linens. It’s simple to put together and always feels festive without being over the top.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Make My Home Feel Like a Beach Cottage Without Living on the Coast?

vintage books and seashells in glass jar

Focus on the elements that create the feeling rather than the location: soft blues and whites, natural textures like jute and wicker, linen textiles, open shelving styled with simple collections, and a few well-placed coastal accents. Fresh flowers help more than almost anything else.

What Colors Work Best for a Coastal Cottage?

Soft whites, cream, navy, aqua, sea glass green, and sandy beige are the core palette. In our cottage, white walls and floors let the color come in through textiles, vintage furniture, and accessories. The aqua cabinet in our kitchen is the boldest single color choice, and it works well because everything else is quieter around it.

What’s the Difference Between Coastal Style and Beach Style?

Coastal style tends to be more polished and curated with clean lines, a refined nautical palette, and less clutter. Beach cottage style is warmer and more personal. It’s vintage finds, mismatched furniture, collected objects, and things that tell the story. The two overlap, but coastal leans more lived-in.

How Do You Decorate a Small Beach Cottage Without It Feeling Cluttered?

Edit ruthlessly and only display what you actually love. In a small space, a few well-chosen pieces make more impact than a bunch of smaller ones. Use vertical space, keep surfaces breathing, and let natural light do some of the work. Our rule has always been: if it doesn’t belong here specifically, it doesn’t stay.

What are Easy Ways to Update a Room for Summer Without Spending Much?

Swap out heavy textiles for lighter ones: linen pillow covers, a cotton throw, and a lighter area rug if you have one. Bring in fresh flowers or a pot of herbs. Fill a glass jar with shells or beach glass. Add a coastal-scented candle. These are small moves, but they shift the whole feel of a room.

What Plants Work Well in a Coastal Cottage Garden?

cottage garden with lavender

Lavender, sea holly, oriental grasses, and plants with silver or blue-green foliage all feel right at home in a coastal setting. For cut flowers, dahlias, zinnias, cosmos, and sweet peas are what I grow every year. They bring the garden inside all summer long.
