Saltwater Sounds: Rainy Days, Falling Leaves, and a Hint of Halloween
Welcome To This Week’s Saltwater Sounds…
A collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. Here, I share everything happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what to look forward to on the blog, and the inspiration I’ve found throughout the week.
This and That
It’s been one of those weekends where you can hear the rain before you even open your eyes in the morning.
An atmospheric river has swept through the Pacific Northwest, leaving everything completely drenched. The leaves are falling faster now, piling up on the garden paths and swirling around the greenhouse. It’s officially that in-between season where fall starts to whisper goodbye.
The Seattle area has definitely flipped the switch to cool, rainy weather. Our highs are in the 50s now, and after days of heavy rain, the garden is well-watered!
I always remind myself — this rain is such a gift for our gardens. It helps rebuild the soil and sets the stage for healthy growth next spring.
“Anyone who thinks sunshine is pure happiness has never danced in the rain.”

I literally threw every skeleton I had back there!

Garden Notes: Preparing for Winter

Now’s the time to mulch those fallen leaves and spread them across your garden beds. They’ll act as a cozy blanket for the soil through the winter months — nature’s free compost!

We’ve also moved all the geraniums from the garden into the greenhouse for overwintering, and everything feels snug and ready for the season ahead.
If you haven’t yet, it’s also a good idea to:
A little prep now means a much easier spring later.
