Mother’s Day Inspiration in the Cottage Garden

Are you looking for some gardening inspiration for Mother’s Day? I’ll take you on a tour to see what’s blooming in my cottage garden, share some ideas on how to make Mother’s Day even more special with flowers and plants, and show you some great garden-inspired gift options I found this year.

Mother's Day Cottage Garden. Here's the greenhouse in spring.

Mother’s Day is the day when everything changes for a gardener like me. Our average last frost date was April 18th, but I really don’t breathe easy until Mother’s Day has come. And I especially don’t plant my tomato and pepper plants in the garden until then.

Mother’s Day is just the beginning of my favorite time of year. The garden is finally coming to life.

The Tulips are in Full Bloom

When I think of the perfect spring flower, I think of a tulip. Here are a few that are in full bloom around the garden.

This tulip variety is called "Charming Beauty" and is a cross between an egg-yolk yellow and peach, and opens to a ruffled double bloom that resembles a garden rose or peony.

This "Renown Unique" tulip has full, peony-shaped, watermelon pink flowers that have yellow anthers rather than the usual black.

green star tulips

This tulip is by far my favorite because of how unique it is. The “Greenstar” variety has two layers of alternating petals the shade of Granny Smith Apples, and white outer edges point that bend like a court jester’s hat.

Like a vibrant pink teacup from Alice in Wonderland, the "Santander" tulip starts in the bud stage as peach-blush. As the fringe edged petals open and turn cotton candy pink, they reveal a blue throat and black anthers.

Mother’s Day Brunch

We’ve been lucky enough to enjoy several sunny Mother’s Days out on the deck overlooking the Puget Sound and the garden. The timing is perfect for lilacs, which are in full bloom around the first past of May for us here in the Pacific Northwest, gardening zone 8B.

I always smile when I see these pictures because the lilacs made it through brunch, but as soon as we were clearing the table they started wilting like crazy!

There are so many different ways each of us will spend Mother’s Day. Some will spend the day with their mother or children. Some will celebrate virtually. And others will honor the loved ones that aren’t with us anymore.

My daughter, Katie, passed away almost 3 years ago. I honor her every Mother’s Day by planting something special in the garden.
