Saltwater Sounds Weekly: Father’s Day

Welcome to Saltwater Sounds, a collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. This is where I share everything happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what’s to come, and the inspiration I’ve found from other bloggers around the web.

This and That…

Happy Father’s Day to all those amazing dads out there! I hope you’re doing something fun to celebrate that special guy in your life.

If you’re trying to figure out something to do today, it’s also “National Go Fishing Day” and “International Picnic Day”, so there are two fun ideas on how to spend the day!

And of course, on holidays like this, it can also be an especially hard day. For those of you that have lost your dad and need a special hug and some extra love, I’ve got you!

I lost my dad 10 years ago and know how hard it is. Hopefully, you’re able to spend some time thinking about your special memories together.

summer annuals

I made a trip to the local nursery, Sunnycrest, to get some annuals to replace the pansies that are starting to look a bit tired.

different colors of coneflowers

And the really great part about my visit is that I finally found some assorted colors of coneflowers that I’ve been looking for.

red coneflower in the garden

A couple of years ago I planted white and red coneflowers (echinacea) and planted them in a container.

Unfortunately, someone who was helping me in the garden tossed this perennial, thinking they were annuals that wouldn’t come back the following year.

yellow coneflower in the garden

I found white, yellow, orange, and red and couldn’t be happier. They are such great flowers for pollinators.

And they look pretty fabulous not only in the garden but in summer flower arrangements.

Around the Garden

The Cottage Garden

Summer is just about here and our cottage garden is starting to pick up the pace a bit.

The lavender and campanula are gorgeous in the garden with those pretty pops of purple.

daisies in the garden

Here are some daisies I planted last June since my existing Shasta daisies were late blooming and we didn’t even see them until after the 4th of July which was very unusual.

hydrangeas starting to bloom

The hydrangea bushes are all starting to bloom.

alliums about to bloom in the cottage garden

I grow alliums that bloom in mid-spring but as you can see I have another variety that blooms during the summer season. And there are so many of them! I can’t wait!

The Cut Flower Garden

There may not be a lot of blooming going on in the cut-flower garden yet, but we are getting closer!

The raised beds are filling up fast.

The only flower that seems to be taking off is the bachelor’s buttons that I started from seed. I had no idea that they were so resilient!

I didn’t plant any this year. But that didn’t seem to matter. They are so determined that they’re growing through the brick pavers with no water source.

It’s absolutely incredible!

My zinnias are growing nice and tall and are starting to show a few budding blooms here and there.

I love zinnias because of how easy they are to start from seed and grow in the summer garden. I planted 4 different varieties this year, after only growing 2 kinds the last few year.

Another easy cut flower annual to grow are cosmos and they are starting to take off as well.

purple sweet pea

I planted 4 varieties of sweet peas this year but only 2 of them are blooming at this time.

Queen Anne's lace

Queen Anne’s Lace is another cut flower that is so close to popping.

This is another flower that is growing out of the pavers throughout the cut flower garden. I actually thought they were weeds until I got closer. I mean…they are EVERYWHERE!

  1. I love this Sunday post, look forward to it every week!
Question, what is the blue flower in the last picture in the post? Is that Bachelor Buttons? I am in Central New York, and I think I could grow them here.
    Thanks

  2. Gorgeous! I could look at your garden and water views all day! Thanks for sharing the beauty for those of us whose gardens are possiby a bit of a mess! 🙂 Hope you’re having a lovely weekend!

  3. HI Kim! Your garden is really coming into bloom. May and June have been so chilly and rainy here I haven’t even gotten all my pots planted. Just not feeling a lot of inspiration this year. I planted some bachelors buttons in the field and along a wild area in the back. I am hoping they are like yours and come back. And I have tons of Queen Ann’s Lace that grow wild around the property. I can always count on that! Have a great day, my friend!
