Saltwater Sounds Weekly Wrap-Up
Welcome to Saltwater Sounds, a collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. This is where I share all that’s been happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what’s to come and the inspiration I have found from other bloggers around the web.
This and That…
Welcome to the first Sunday Saltwater Sounds of the month.
It’s been a heartbreaking week with all that is happening in Ukraine. It’s hard to think of anything else these days with so many people risking their lives while they fight for their country and flee from their homes. I continue to pray for peace. If you are wanting to help Ukraine but aren’t sure how you can find out more HERE and HERE
Our blogging community is grieving the loss of two friends. Paula from Sweet Pea and Michelle from The Painted Hinge were such talented ladies and will be truly missed.
The Greenhouse
I spent yesterday in the greenhouse, cleaning up and getting ready for all the work I have in store next week.
It was a beautiful day and I had the Dutch doors open, letting some much-needed fresh air in. Here’s what’s going on in the greenhouse today:
- I cleaned up the overwintering geraniums.
- Cuttings were taken for new geranium starts.
- The 72 cell trays were filled with potting soil and seed starting mix.
- Sweet pea and yarrow seedlings were watered.
- Snapdragon seeds were bottom watered (still no germination).
- Cleaned all the shelving and sawdust from the latest project.

Here are the geranium cuttings from yesterday.
Here are my tiny, tiny yarrow seedlings. I had to show you something besides the sweet peas.
Next week will be a big week with lots of seed sowing. cosmos and zinnias are always my favorites because they only take a few days to germinate. They are also bigger seeds so they’re easier to work with.
Vintage Sink Projects
Do you remember the vintage sink my sweet neighbor gifted me months ago?
We finally got this beauty put in the greenhouse.
We still have to find a faucet and work on the drain but here it is.
We also had an extra vintage farm sink from the kitchen that needed a home. I decided that I needed a sink out in the cut flower garden.
We still need to add a faucet here as well. And of course, I need to clean up the sawdust and mess that was made when it was being installed.
The Garden – First Week of March
We’ve been getting some pretty fabulous sunrises and sunsets this past week.
I’m adding some primroses to my containers to add a pop of spring.
The crocuses and primroses are in full bloom.
The hyacinths are also popping.
And here are the tulips in the cutting garden.
What’s Happening at Shiplap and Shells…

I love all your wonderful flowers Kim – you’ve made our beautiful PNW even more perfectly beautiful! Thanks for all the tips – I hope to be able to use some of them in my own garden soon. Thanks for sharing all that great info. Hope you have a lovely week!
You are so sweet, Barbara. I hope you do grow your own cut flowers. Think about how amazing it would be to use them in your tablescapes!
Thank you so much for sharing my tips for a more organized and focused week, I really appreciate it. As you know I’m very passionate about being organized. It’s really helped me to live a more well-rounded and happier life. I love seeing everything that’s going on in your garden. I know it’s a lot of work but gosh you make it seem so easy and magical. Still obsessed with your rug by the way! I just love it all. Great post lady! Big hugs and thank yous, CoCo
I learn so much from you CoCo. I love being organized too. It really just makes me a happier person. Sometimes I don’t know how to get there though. Thank you for your tips.
Thanks for sharing Kim. I can’t believe all the gardening you already have going on. Happy Monday??
I’m actually surprised myself, Ann. March has been going by so fast. It’s fun to see how much is coming up.
Kim, thanks for all the tips on geraniums. My challenge is keeping them for dying during our hot summers. We physically put the large pots in the pick-up bed and drive them up to our cabin for the summer. But I’m thinking about maybe putting them in the house this year as the pots are huge and heavy. But I haven’t tried making new plants from cuttings. My mother always did that and your post reminded me of her. Thanks for sharing my candle wax removal post. You are the best!
I remember now that you drive the geraniums up to the cabin for the summer. That’s a lot of work! But I’m sure it’s better than them all dying in the heat. Have a great week ahead sweet friend.
Without a greenhouse I really don’t have the space to do cuttings or start seeds. A good idea to start seed especially perennials outdoors.
So sad to hear about the 2 bloggers. I too looked them up and so young, I agree. These past few years have really torn at me so your sweet post about flowers and spring is so welcomed.
I looked up that barn and that house! Inspiring.
Lovely post Kim.
Hope it’s nice in your area so it’s a special Sunday for you. So wish I had a greenhouse..I’d be out there piddling around now:0)
Thank you so much for reaching out Lori. It really has been a couple of miserable years. Garden therapy is real and I’m so glad that my flower posts have made you feel even a little bit better. I really appreciate the kind words, and only wish you had a greenhouse to hang out in. Have a good week. Hugs!
Kim,
I love the sink in your greenhouse! It’s perfect there. So many great shares and I appreciate you for sharing my table.
Thanks, Rachel! I am really loving having a sink in there.
O my goodness. I looked up both of the blogs you mentioned. These ladies were young. My heart goes out to their families and my prayers as well. Your house your greenhouse and your view is all so pretty.
They were young Linda. Paula bravely battled cancer for years. She was so strong and will be missed dearly. Wishing you a happy week.
Gardening season is getting CLOSER FOR ME. My sweet peas just germinated! I’m so excited! Thanks for sharing my winter sowing post. It’s so cool to have more growing space to start seeds! We all need more flowers right???
We definitely need more flowers. I’m worried about my snapdragon seeds. They still haven’t germinated and of course, I didn’t write down how long they took last year.
So many great tips in this post, Kim! I got all my seed packets out last night to see what I need to start first. I don’t have a greenhouse yet so I’ll have to start them indoors. I can’t look at my sweet peas without thinking of Paula, they will always remind me of her! I love the new rug, it looks fab in your living room! Have a lovely Sunday!
Hi Jayne, I hope you had a great weekend. I know exactly what you mean about sweet peas reminding you of Paula. I still can’t believe it. I can’t wait to see what flowers you grow this year.
