Saltwater Sounds Weekly: Saying Goodbye to August in the Best Way
Welcome to Saltwater Sounds, a collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. This is where I share all that’s been happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what’s to come and the inspiration I have found from other bloggers around the web.
This and That…
Hello to you on this “feels like fall” Sunday in the Pacific Northwest.
If you want the weather to change around here, it seems like all you have to do is wait a day or two. We went from high 80s last week to low 70s this weekend and it feels so good!
I was pretty much offline for an entire week while we were on the boat, cleaning her up from all that sawdust and mess. Let’s just say that I had no idea I was going to be without any internet so I didn’t plan for it. I just went dark.
I have a lot to catch up on but it was a lot of fun starting to make Wildflower our own.
Today’s Saltwater Sounds Weekly shares how I’ve been saying goodbye to August in the best way I know how…enjoying the time I have left in my garden and out on our boat, Wildflower.
Our Time on Wildflower
Rather than going to fun places around the Puget Sound like we originally planned, we kept the boat at our marina, about 8 minutes away from home.
The good news with being so close is we could grab things from home that we needed and I was able to tend to the garden here and there.

Here’s a gorgeous view of the sunset from the marina one evening.
Here’s Ollie the next morning on guard. Can you see what he sees and why he is in such a frazzle?
Hank the Heron was making the rounds, looking for his morning breakfast.
He’s a regular at the marina and we saw him every day.
Ollie was ready for bed here on the first night. I’m really not trying to play favorites. Sorry, Jax! All I got was his tail and backend but he was pretty happy too.
A Tour of the Boat
I took some interior pictures of the boat for you to see as I went from room to room to clean and organize.
This view is what you see when you first walk onto the boat.
The galley has been renovated and I’m loving the changes.
- The peninsula or bar was reworked so it now flows with the rest of the space and is more open.
- Quartz countertops were installed.
- Subway tile was added to the walls.
- New appliances including a refrigerator, microwave, range, and sink were brought in.
We have an electric stove and oven at home so this propane range is going to be so much nicer to cook with.
The eating space is off of the galley and across from the salon.
Here’s the salon. We are in the process of finding some type of ottoman that will also serve as a coffee table with perhaps more storage inside.
This is our stateroom which we are loving! We couldn’t even make the bed in the old boat without climbing into the bed to do so. There was no walking space around it.
The 2 closets/lockers are nice and roomy and there are so many drawers and other storage spaces to put things throughout the boat.
Don’t you love the ceilings?
Here we are upstairs in the pilothouse where we all sit when underway.
What I love about this space is that you can see out the windows from all directions. We end up eating meals and playing games up here. It’s great for entertaining.
We also have 2 smaller staterooms and 2 heads as well but I’ll show you those on another post with the before pictures.
A Walk Through the Garden
I was lucky enough to be able to run home here and there to check on the garden, do some deadheading and watering, and even take a few pictures and videos.
We have so many blooms in both the cottage garden and cut flower garden right now.
The dahlias are at their peak right now and really add a gorgeous pop of color throughout.
Pollinators LOVE dahlias!
Isn’t this just the prettiest sunflower?
Strawflowers are so pretty this time of year and I can’t wait to dry some this week.
It took all summer but the zinnias are finally at the height they should have been all along.
Don’t you just love the bold color of these bachelor’s buttons?
Coneflowers (echinacea) and black-eyed Susans are blooming in abundance these days and continue to be some of my favorite summer perennials in the garden.
It’s a beautiful time in the flower gardens right now. How is your garden holding up this summer? Are you starting to plant fall annuals yet?

Thanks for the boat tour, Kim! What make, year and feet is it? We have a 43 ft Bayliner but are looking to transition to a larger boat in a few years. I really like how yours is laid out. Reminds of an Ocean Alexander model. It is nice to walk around the bed. My flowers are doing great too! I think they have loved the hot weather we are having in the northwest this year. Like you, my zinnias didn’t take off until just a few weeks ago. I hope we have a few more weeks of summer. I’m not ready to plant for fall. Take care!
Oh my, your boat is beautiful! I don’t think I’ve ever been in a boat like that and I could get used to that for sure. It seems so much roomier than a camper and I would imagine being on the water makes it even more relaxing. Your gardens are stunning! Thanks for sharing your beautiful little slice of paradise!
Kim, your boat is GORGEOUS! It is so roomy and luxurious. I love what you’ve done to the kitchen and that stateroom! It will be hard not to spend all your time on it. I love your Sunday post. That kitchen renovation in DC is filled with amazing ideas and I could live in that lake house. Thanks for sharing all the goodies!
Wow your boat is really beautiful. It looks really big and so cozy. Can’t wait to see more. You can’t tell how huge it is from the dock. Thanks for the tour.
This tour of your wildflower was so interesting. I did not realize there was so much space inside. I have a strange terror of boats and water ( the dogs have life jackets, right?) but I can see how much you enjoy this. It is very nice. I could sit in your beautiful garden forever though. Lovely.
Kim
Oh my gosh the boat looks amazing. Thanks for the tour. Thanks fir sharing my country garden party also. I’d love to link to your boat tour next week.
I freakin’ love your boat!!! It’s beautiful, Kim!! I really think Stacy & I should come for a ride next year…roadtrip!!
