Saltwater Sounds: A Coastal Journey Through Canada’s Charm

Welcome To This Week’s Saltwater Sounds…

A collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. Here, I share everything happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what to look forward to on the blog, and the inspiration I’ve found throughout the week.

This past week has been full of contrasts—big city adventures, quiet coves, and cozy little island hideaways.

From biking through Vancouver to paddling in Deep Cove, and then tucking into the snug charm of Bowen Island, we’ve been soaking in every bit of coastal magic.

Anchoring at False Creek

Science World near False Creek, Vancouver at sunset

We started anchored right in the middle of it all—False Creek, with Science World and Rogers Arena glowing at sunset.

Here’s a view from our boat.

The city views were incredible, especially as the lights came on in the evening.

We actually saw Rogers Arena lit up two nights in a row, and the colors were completely different each time.

The sunsets were stunning, even if the nearby wildfires were the reason behind those dramatic skies.

Bike Riding Around Vancouver

Our bikes came in handy for a ride through Stanley Park and along the Vancouver beaches, which was the perfect way to see the city.

Grandville Island Market

Granville public market

Of course, no visit is complete without a trip to Granville Island Market.

We browsed through all the fresh foods, picked up some homemade pasta to take with us, and enjoyed the bustling atmosphere.

Here are some photos of the market from the outside.

There were some great shops around the area as well.

Lunch at The Sandbar was a highlight too—especially with a boat hanging above the dining tables. Only in Vancouver!

Deep Cove Yacht Club

Next, we made our way to Deep Cove in North Vancouver, and what a scene it was.

kayakers in Deep Cove

The hot weather brought everyone out onto the water—paddle boarders, kayakers, swimmers, and plenty of dogs too (including Jax and Ollie). We joined right in, cooling off and enjoying the summer day.

The town itself was charming, with colorful flowers and plenty of benches to sit and soak it all in.

We even had lunch while a jazz band played nearby, which made it feel like a little summer festival.

Union Steamship Company Marina in Snug Harbour

When the forecast called for rain and wind, we headed to Snug Harbour on Bowen Island to tuck in for a couple of days.

What a sweet surprise this spot turned out to be. The marina had everything we needed—a store, a restaurant, and even cottages for rent.

We had dinner at Tuscany Restaurant, sitting at a covered outdoor table surrounded by hanging greenery while the rain fell around us.

Copper Spirit Distillery

We also stopped at the Copper Spirit Distillery, which was such a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon.

The next day was all about the rain…lots and lots of rain! What a great excuse to hang out on the boat for the day.
