Fall Home Tour Inspired by Nature and Vintage Décor
Are you looking for some ideas to decorate your home this fall? Come along as I take you on a fall home tour inspired by nature and vintage decor.
Welcome to The Blogger’s Best Fall Home Tour
Welcome to the Bloggers Best Fall Home Tour, hosted by my friend Kelly at The Tattered Pew. I’m so happy to be joining 29 amazingly talented blogging friends this week to share how we’ve decorated our homes for the fall season.
If you’ve just come on over from Lynne at My Family Thyme, welcome! I’m sure you were inspired by her simple fall home decorating ideas.

About Shiplap and Shells
Whether you are new to my Shiplap and Shells blog or have been following along for a while, I’m so glad you’ve stopped by today.
We live in a 1920 beach cottage on Puget Sound in Washington State, about 60 miles SW of Seattle. I love shopping for vintage pieces that complement our 100-year-old house.
I also love to garden. I’m a self-taught hobby gardener that has a HUGE passion for gardening, especially when it comes to cutting flowers. So it’s not hard to see why I have a thing for bringing the outdoor elements inside.
You can read more about me here. Make sure you say hi in the comments below.
Decorating for Fall in Phases
When it comes to decorating for the fall season I tend to decorate in phases.
This is the first fall decor phase which is more of a transition from summer to autumn. I slowly put away the pile of vintage wooden oars, seashells, glass bottles and jars, and navy and yellow pillows. They are replaced by sunflowers, and dried hydrangeas, with cream, rose, and gray textiles.
When it starts getting a little colder, I’ll add other elements to my home like heavier throws, more pumpkins, and Thanksgiving-specific decor.

Cottage Style Living Room Fall Tour
First up on the fall home tour is the living room.
We live in a 1600-square-foot cottage with a front door that opens to the living room. So there’s no cozy entryway to welcome you in. You just walk through the door and you are here.
Our cottage-style living room is filled with vintage and nature-inspired decor.
There is a mix of…
- OLD AND NEW
- FRESH AND FAUX PLANTS, FLOWERS AND FRUIT
- COASTAL AND FALL DECOR
Nature Inspired
My faux olive tree brightens up this corner. And the dried hydrangeas from the garden will last through Christmas for that budget-friendly decor with a big impression.

Fall is All About Warm & Cozy
My autumn color palette consists mostly of burgundy, rose, cream, and gray.
One of the things we loved when we first walked into this room was the window seat that looks out to the view of Puget Sound.

Vintage and Nature Inspired Fall Home Decor
My fall home decor is full of vintage pieces and outdoor elements inspired by nature, which by the way are my favorite things to decorate with.

Using fresh and faux fruit is one of my favorite ways to decorate for fall. And as you can see, the apples and pears look great in a dough bowl or Ironstone dish.
Both the red and green apples are faux and are used ALL THE TIME!

Using wicker picnic baskets and vintage suitcases bring warmth to the room and are fabulous vintage-inspired decor props for fall.
I love showing off my vintage books from Jaysworld. And a vintage corbel or two finish this vignette perfectly.
Drying hydrangeas are so easy to do and makes a great statement for fall.
I don’t use too many real pumpkins indoors but do love to display pumpkins with different textures and sizes throughout the house for fall.
Add some pinecones to bring in that touch of nature.

Cottage Style Kitchen Fall Tour
Welcome to our cottage-style kitchen.
If you haven’t seen our kitchen renovation, make sure you read my post Our 100-Year-Old Kitchen – Before, After & Everything in Between. We literally tore everything down to the studs.
We really wanted an island in this space, but couldn’t fit the size we had hoped for.
This vintage dresser was found on Craigslist and the butcher block top was from a Dunkin Donuts that was going out of business.
Open shelving is a great way for me to display different collections each season. I replaced the turquoise, yellows, and navy from the summer with greens, whites, and copper.
Fall is a great time to bring the copper and crocks back out to the kitchen for the autumn months. I’ll keep them displayed through winter as well.
Faux vs. Real Houseplants
I have a confession to make.
My outdoor gardening skills do not transfer to houseplants. I AM THE WORST plant mama. But I’m still trying, that’s what counts, right?
My 2 houseplants at the moment are this ivy and an olive tree bought at Trader Joe’s. Let’s touch base in a few months and see if they’re still alive. Fingers crossed. Toes crossed.
Here’s another olive tree, faux of course.

One of my favorite ways to decorate for fall is with copper. I probably have 6 or 8 copper kettles and continue to buy them every time I find one.
Fall Candles
No fall home tour is complete unless there are some fall-scented candles around. Candles are one of my very favorite things about fall! Antique Candle Co. has the BEST scents for autumn including Pumpkin Spice, Apple Butter, Vanilla Bean, and Pecan Pie.
Our small house doesn’t have a formal dining room, just this cozy eating space.
We added window seating and took down the wall between the kitchen and living room to create more room for entertaining.
Did I mention that the views are incredible out of these windows? You can see the greenhouse, gardens, and water views.
This could be why we rarely go out to eat!
Cottage Garden Fall Tour
Let’s be honest, it’s a lot of fun to decorate the house for fall.
But for me, the autumn season is truly bittersweet. It’s the time when I have to say goodbye to all those summer flowers that I spent so much time growing and nurturing.
It’s also the time when gardeners are starting to put their gardens to bed. There is so much to do to get ready for the next growing season.
Asters, sedum autumn joy, mums, and dahlias are blooming in my garden right now. Check out some fall perennials that will give your garden the wow factor here.
There isn’t much time left for the cut flower garden. There are still some strawflowers, zinnias, and globe amaranth. I’ll be pulling what’s left of the cosmos this weekend.
The good news is that as I pull the spent flowers from the cutting garden, I will now have room to plant my spring bulbs this month. I can’t wait to show you what I’ll be growing next spring in the raised beds.
Here’s a view from last year’s greenhouse porch. I’ll basically be planting the same annuals:
- Ornamental kale and cabbage
- Mums
- Asters
- Pansies and Violas (these will come back in the spring)
I have been looking for celosia and budget-friendly grasses but am having little luck, but I’ll keep looking.
And of course, nothing says fall like a pumpkin or 10. Cornhusks will finish off this area beautifully.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my fall home tour and are taking an idea or two with you. It’s so fun to decorate for the season with vintage decor and elements from outdoor nature.
Thank you for being here, I so appreciate it. I’d love to hear from you, please leave a comment below.
Until next time,
Happy Fall!

Kim I really enjoy your blogs. Especially your home and gardens with that gorgeous view! Your mixing of vintage into your home is just my style, style sisters! Thanks for sharing!
What a treat to visit your gorgeous fall home and gardens, Kim! Your home is so beautiful and charming! I love the mix of natural elements and vintage treasures. Each photo is full of inspiration. Your copper pieces are lovely and now I am on the hunt for some copper too. It is wonderful to be on this tour with you! Happy Fall!
Thank you so much for the kind words, Lynne. It’s always fun touring with you!
You home is absolutely beautiful with it’s natural fall touches. I love nature inspired seasonal decor. Thanks for sharing your home.
Thank you so much, Tara! I really appreciate your kind words.
Well you know I adore every inch of your home and garden but when you throw the dogs in the mix, I can’t stand it! They are so adorable. Everything is so colorful and happy. I bet your neighbors love living close to you and probably tell their friends that your yard is their yard! I would! And I bet it’s hard to get anyone to leave once they’ve visited! I wouldn’t! 😉 Loved hopping with you this week. Sorry I’m late to the party. Life got in the way. pinned
Thank you for the wonderful compliments, Cindy! I do need to take pictures of the dogs more, they do seem to be a hit. I only wish you were my neighbor. I always love hopping with you too.
Your home just always looks so happy, Kim! Everything is so lush and beautiful. Love the basket wreath, those dried hydrangeas, and all the natural elements. I would never have guessed you were a bad plant mama indoors because your gardens always take my breath away! Pinned!
Thank you, Crissy! I think I forget to water them and I just haven’t taken the time to learn how to care for houseplants. But I would love to learn.
Where can I purchase the white slipcovers on your chairs. Beautiful.
We bought them from Quatrine Home.
Your home is so lovely and inviting! I would love to live like this with a large variety of different things everywhere but my husband…well that’s another story…lol. He would not appreciate the look and would call this a bunch of junk. I just can’t seem to make him understand the beauty in vintage or older things. I think you’ve outdone any other blogger and you have truly captured taking the old and using it to your advantage.
I’m so lucky that my husband actually likes vintage and goes thrifting with me. I can understand that it’s not a look that everyone likes. Thank you for the incredibly sweet comments. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you reaching out.
Kim, your home is lovely in all seasons and particular charming and cosy in the fall. Loved the tour!
Thank you so much, Juliet!
Oh Kim I just adore your cottage and garden! I love all of your vintage and nature inspired decor! Absolutely beautiful. If I show up for a visit one day don’t be surprised.? Enjoy your Fall my friend and thanks for joining me this week! Pinned!
Thank you so so much for hosting this amazing blog tour Kelly! I have so much fun participating in these. and I would love for you to show up on my front doorstep one of these days.
Your home is so gorgeous, Kim. As always you knocked it out of the park with your fall home tour. Jax and Ollie are such cute helpers and your gardens are still so stunning! I enjoyed being a part of this fun tour with you. Pinned!
I always appreciate your kind words, Jen. I always love touring with you.
You know I absolutely love every. single. detail:) What a treat to get to peruse your home and garden all decorated for Fall. Maybe now I’m actually motivated to finish off my decorating inside, which has been a struggle! Nature and vintage…you got it there! Always enjoy touring with you, friend!
Thank you, Lora! I have been so far behind this year. I barely got the living room and kitchen decorated. I’m hoping that Christmas goes better.
I so enjoyed your Fall Home Tour, Kim! I love it’s charm and how you’ve decorated each space! And that garden is spectacular too!
You’re so sweet Kristy. I really appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time to visit.
Your house is so cozy and beautiful!! I love how you have decorated for fall! So many gorgeous details! It is so fun to join you on this blogging collab.
Than kyou Robyn. I feel the same way about your lovely home.
Could your blog be any prettier!? Each picture is like eye candy for those of us who love home decor and gardening. The story behind your island is awesome and the view from your kitchen table is breathtaking! I have pinned several of your photos. So grateful to tour with you this week, Kim! Here’s to a happy fall!
Thank you for the kind words, Kim! I really appreciate it. Always fun to tour with you sweet friend.
Your house and gardens are beautiful! Thank you for sharing your pictures! I wanted to ask what the beautiful turquoise paint color is?!? The cabinet in your kitchen and the table in the living room! Thanks!
Thank you so much! I am right in the middle of a room switch upstairs where the paint is stored. I have made a note to get back to you in the next couple of days with the paint colors. Thank you for your interest.
Your home is so full of charm friend! And your outdoor Fall garden – WOW!!
Thank you sweet Ana!
Kim such a beautiful home tour. Hydrangeas are the best aren’t they. You have so many beautiful pieces and the fur babaies are so stink’n adorable.
I had to go back and scorll again. Your garden is so pretty always. Pinned! Great touring with you!
Thank you, Cindy! My puppies thank you too. Yes, hydrangeas are the best.
Kim,
Your home is stunning in all seasons but your colors are fantastic for fall. So fun doing these together.
Thank you, Rachel!
What an incredibly beautiful home you have! It’s so cheerful, cozy, and inviting and I love all the fall touches.
That’s very sweet of you Shawna. Thank you.
Kim I love all your details from the wooden jax on your coffee table to the old windows, shutters, and books. And of course the pups! Pinned!
Thank you, Ann. I need to include those pups more often. They seem to be the star of the show.
Every space of your home looks so cozy and inviting Kim! I just want to curl up with one of the pups and look out a window. It’s always such a treat to see your gorgeous garden. Is it just me or do the colors look even more amazing this time of year? Pinning!
Thank you for the amazing compliments, Michelle! I’m looking forward to taking it easy inside with the dogs, looking at the window, and taking a break from the garden. I think the roses and purples really pop this time of year outdoors. Thank you for being here.
Kim, it is always a pleasure to take a peek at your lovely garden. I adore your charming cottage and we both favor vintage and natural decor. Your copper accents in the kitchen caught my eye as I’ve been bringing back more copper in my kitchen, too. Beautiful tour, my friend! Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction
Yes, we do love our vintage, don’t we? Thank you for your kindness, Cecilia.
Kim your home looks so pretty all decorated for fall. I’m so glad you are dabbling in houseplants! Once you get going, you home will be filled! xo
I would love to bring more houseplants to our home. We’ll see.
I have to know what that pumpkin to the right of your vase of hydrangeas is made out of…you know my diy brain was expanding the pic on my phone trying to figure it out!!!
I’m sad news, I’m kicking myself for not grabbing one of the olive trees last weekend when I was at TJs!! My carriage was filled with pumpkins, all the dried pods, & another houseplant …
I’m so sorry it took me so long to respond to your question, Jennifer. They look like dried apple slices that the pumpkin is m ade out of.
I love the way your home is filled with treasures, Kim! I could spend the entire day looking through your pretty photos!
I love using copper in the fall too. I’ve been hunting for some nice kettles!
Thank you, Leen! It’s so funny. A few years ago when I was looking for copper kettles, I couldn’t find many at all, especially at a good price. Now that I have so many, I find them everywhere for just a couple of dollars. Go Figure!
I so much enjoyed seeing your home decorated for fall and your gorgeous flowers. I slowly scrolled through your post, enjoying every single picture that you shared. It’s great that Jax is now old enough that you were able to add the rug back to your living room.
Thank you so much, Paula. It is so mice to have an area rug back down on the floor. So much cozier now.
