Saltwater Sounds Weekly: Happy Mother’s Day!
Welcome to Saltwater Sounds, a collection of ideas, tips, and inspiration. Here, I share everything happening in the world of Shiplap and Shells, what’s to come, and the inspiration I’ve found from other bloggers around the web.
This and That
Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms out there! Today, we celebrate you—those who have cared for and loved us unconditionally. You are our everyday heroes, providing strength and comfort, always ready to listen and lift us up.
May your special day be filled with the love, laughter, and joy that you bring into our lives every day.
I also know that this holiday can be pretty challenging for those who have experienced loss. I’m sending my heartfelt love and compassion to anyone who has lost a mother or a child. You are in my thoughts today.
This day is always a hard one for me after losing both my daughter and my mother. But I’m spending the day in my garden today, reflecting on my favorite memories and planting a special plant for each of them.
And, of course, I’ll be surrounded by my boys, Jax and Ollie. Being a dog mama is a pretty special job, don’t you think?

Vintage Shopping
I have always loved those days when I could go vintage shopping and have lunch with a girlfriend. Last week, we shopped at one of my favorite stores, Josephine’s Mercantile.
I get so many great ideas each time I come here.
It’s so much fun checking out all the booths.
I saw a few outdoor vintage chairs, metal baskets, and terra cotta pots.
This green and pink floral tableware is perfect for a spring tablescape.
Check out the blue and white pieces. And the windows on the cabinet.
They had great furniture pieces in several of the booths.

What’s Blooming in the Garden
Alliums everywhere!
I love the pop of purple these fun flowers bring to the garden.
I’ll share my flower containers and all the other fun things I’m just finishing up next week!
Garden Supplies and Tools
Check out my favorite garden supplies and tools for the growing season. Whether you’re looking for potting soil or deer repellent, you’ll find what I use in my own garden.
Yard Projects
We’re still in the process of having a fence put in, but I can show you the garden beds now that they’re finished.
I planted seedlings that we had left over.
The plan for next year is to divide perennials in my garden and transplant them into these beds. Daisies, phlox, and coneflower will be much easier to care for than replanting annuals each year.
And they’ll look amazing!
We also received two 4 x 4′ raised beds for veggies and flowers from Epic Gardening.
We added cardboard, mulched leaves from last fall, and soil. Next comes the plants and fish compost.
I’ll give you an update next week.

Dear Kim,
I thought about you today because this is my second Mother’s Day without my daughter and I know you lost your daughter unexpectedly too. I hope planting a plant for your daughter and your mom was a healing experience for you.
I am not doing much these days, as my bone on bone knees have decided to make my life miserable. I see a surgeon in June. Didn’t you have a knee replacement?
I enjoy reading your posts. Blessings to you Sweetie,
I was so happy you reached out! I know how difficult this day is. Each year does get a little easier (this is year 5) and I hope it does for you as well. I’m so incredibly sorry for your loss.
I really enjoyed spending time in the garden today. I planted a Calle lily for my daughter and a columbine for my mom.
I hope your appointment with the surgeon goes well. It looks like we both have yet another thing in common. I did have a knee replacement last year but it still hurts quite a bit. I started PT again to see if more strengthening might help. The other knee replacement happens in October.
Thank you so much for reading my blog. It means so much!
Wishing you peace and comfort sweet friend.
I was wondering if you’ve ever shared how you lost your mother and your daughter.
Hi Jan,
My daughter passed away in 2018 from an infection and my mom passed away in 2022 from a short illness. Both were very unexpected.
Kim, your fence/planters look SO good. Cannot wait to see them finished. Happy Mother’s Day, sweet friend. I pinned ALL the pictures of the lakeside home in Sweden. Gosh, I love a checkered floor! Glad you are in the garden today. This morning I was walking through my palm orchard and realized that I am living in heaven on earth. It struck me that if I had to envision a day in heaven it would be exactly what I experienced this morning in the garden~perfect weather, blue skies, birds chirping, surrounded by flowers and Finn at my heels. Counting my blessings today.
The floor is what I liked the most about the lake house too Mary! I absolutely love that you compared your garden moments to how a day in heaven would be like. I had the same experience today with the clear blue sky and sunny day with the seagulls and birds making all there noises. Jax, Ollie and I had a great day in the garden. Love you friend.
Kim,
I love your new fence and the garden beds in front of it are just that much more fun!
The garden beds are the cherry on top!
Happy Mother’s Day Kim. I’m sure today is a very bittersweet day for you missing your mom and your daughter, Katie. Sending lots of love and hugs to you! I Hope you get to enjoy a beautiful and relaxing day in the garden.
Thank you Jen! I hope you had the most fabulous Mother’s Day my friend.
